Time for #LocalAuthorities and #CombinedAuthorities to start work on their applications for Traffic Signal Obsolescence Grant (TSOG) 2023 (£30m) and Green Light Fund (GLF) 2023 (£20m) ahead of the 22 December (12pm) deadline. The Intelligent Traffic Management Fund (ITMF) has some very useful planning time now ahead of the application process opening between April and June 2024 for the £20m challenge fund. Especially excited about the opportunity to collaborate with potential partners on the ITMF, bringing to life the opportunity new technology can play in traffic signals and network management, and the positive impact that can have in our towns, cities and regions. #trafficsignals #transportplanning #networkmanagement

Excited to share our latest publication in IEEE Access on Real-Time Railway Traffic Management! Our paper addresses the challenges of adjusting train timetables during perturbations to minimize delays and ensure seamless passenger connections. Abstract: This paper addresses the real-time Railway Traffic Management Problem (rtRTMP), which involves adjusting train timetables during perturbations. Perturbations in railway networks often lead to significant delays, necessitating strategies to minimize their propagation. An important objective of traffic management is to facilitate passenger transfers through connecting trains, which may become difficult when traffic is disturbed. Pursuing this objective, the paper focuses on mitigating train delays by reducing connection times during transfers without compromising connections. To achieve this, we extend an existing Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) formulation for the rtRTMP by introducing two alternative enhancements. Moreover, we pursue the same delay mitigation by extending an Ant Colony Optimization algorithm for the Train Routing Selection Problem (TRSP): this problem reduces the number of alternative routes to be considered for trains, making rtRTMP instances tractable. We assess the efficiency of the proposed enhancements in reducing the total train delay while preserving passenger connections in multiple instances representing traffic in the Lille-Flandres station control area, located in the north of France. The results demonstrate that the integration of these enhancements, in both the TRSP and the rtRTMP, results in a significant reduction in delay propagation. Read the Full Paper: https://lnkd.in/dR5s9rES I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to my thesis supervisors Paola Pellegrini and Joaquin Rodriguez from Gustave Eiffel University for their invaluable guidance and support throughout my research journey. I also express deep gratitude to Neeraj Chaudhary, my supervisor from industry collaboration at Rail Concept, whose insights were instrumental in shaping this work. Special thanks goes to Bianca Pascariu, co-author of this paper and colleague in the ESTAS lab ("Evaluation des Systèmes de Transport Automatisés et de leur Sécurité"), for her contributions and collaboration. #RailwayTrafficManagement #AntColonyOptimization #MILPModeling #RECIFE #RailwayOperations #PassengerTransfers

How should a European high-speed rail network look like? Here is what we found https://lnkd.in/eKfW9mcs Clearly, the high-speed rail (HSR) network in Europe does not yet form a European network and is still far from the level needed to achieve a considerable shift from plane (and car) to train. The current state amounts to a patchwork of poorly connected subnetworks with a suboptimal performance from a user, operator and societal perspective. We conduct an extensive series of experiments to test the network’s performance under various policy priorities and HSR design variables. Our experiment results show that designs resulting from the consideration of externalities yield extensive networks with larger coverage and modal shifts. The obtained network designs contain four different line types, exhibit spatial disparities in network density, and allow for the identification of potential hubs and critical infrastructure. We hope that these findings as well as other on-going studies we are currently working on in our research group will contribute to the design of an attractive and competitive European HSR-network. open-access, with Jorik Grolle, Barth Donners, Jan Anne Annema and Mark Duinkerken
