2024 is here, back to work, and we're starting the year with a couple of interesting media bits: 1️⃣ Visual Capitalist has updated their already awesome History of Game Revenues Chart. Even if you're not a fan of predictions, it's still interesting to see the different opinions. https://lnkd.in/d2J2y3bs Personally, I think 2024 will continue to be challenging for the video games industry, we're not out of the woods yet, but hope we see the light in the second half of the year.

What makes you the most money in the game industry? According to David Walgrave from Larian Studios, it's not rocket science. The most profitable strategy involves building a strong community, listening to feedback, respecting players' time, and avoiding over-reliance on microtransactions. The recent DICE event highlighted a major issue: over 15,000 employees were laid off, with many having spent more than 3 years in the industry. This shift, where employees, consumers, and IPs are reduced to entries in a spreadsheet, is a troubling trend. Larian Studios doesn't have shareholders, but they also don't prioritize them. Instead, the focus is on the community and the game. To those developers who lost their jobs, know that support is available. Canadian-based Copychaser Games take on a more spaced-out setting with Times & Galaxy after their success in the ghostly world of Speed Dating with Ghosts. While journalism and the efforts behind it are at the core of the game, it never feels like a simple education tool or gamification of media literacy. The well-rounded writing and inviting world keep the game lighthearted and fun—just like any adventure game of the LucasArts variety would. You play as a robot who was created with the primary function to report on the news.
