We're excited to reveal the final conceptual designs for the Folsom Trail. The project includes a thoughtfully curated urban canopy, a tranquil pond with a cascade feature, and an expanded trail space. By reclaiming part of the right-of-way, we aim to elevate the trail experience for residents. We're eager to see how these designs contribute to the vibrant future of the city! I can't remember where this building is, but I love the boldness of the colour. Does this help a building as an investment? Does it help the functioning of it for its users? Does it add to the urban landscape? Financially this might be demonstrable; the other issues are subjective and perhaps depend on the audience, the climate, the local culture and the local temperament. Personally I think colour adds something to life and to our urban fabric. What do you think? #colouredfacade #dramainarchitecture #frittedfacade #colourinarchitecture #colourinbuildings #colourinurbanlandascape #urbanlandscape

Discover the fascinating insights in The Roots of New Urbanism: John Nolen’s Garden City Vision for Florida. Bruce Stephenson delves into the pivotal role John Nolen played in shaping the New Urbanism movement, a response to suburban sprawl grounded in traditional American civic design. By 1919, at the peak of his career, Nolen shifted from frustration with urban planning’s limitations to championing the garden city concept, inspired by his collaboration with English planner Raymond Unwin. Nolen’s 1922 master plan for St. Petersburg embraced green spaces and mixed-use neighborhoods, advocating for thoughtful, regulated private development. His vision for Venice aimed to create a regional hub that harmonized natural beauty with civic participation, although challenges such as the land boom and racial segregation hindered progress. While Nolen's contributions were often overshadowed by the rise of engineering-driven planning, his legacy endures, particularly in Venice, which honored him with a memorial in 1977. Stephenson closes by emphasizing the enduring relevance of Nolen’s ideas, urging a return to community-centric urban planning that fosters inclusivity and democratic values. Ask Yourself: Wouldn’t you like to? -Eliminate Head-on Collisions -Eliminate T-Bone Collisions -Eliminate High-Speed Crashes -Eliminate High-Energy Crashes -Improve Pedestrian Safety -Reduce Fatalities 90% to 100% -Reduce severe injuries -Reduce Vehicle/Vehicle Conflict Points -Reduce pedestrian/vehicle conflict points -Improve Operations -Reduce greenhouse gases -Create a resilient facility Reach out and we can help!
Celebrating National Roundabouts Week 2024! Did you know that roundabouts reduce fatal crashes by 90% and overall crashes by 39% compared to traditional intersections? They're not just efficient; they're life-saving! During National Roundabouts Week, we celebrate communities that embrace the many benefits of this design. In the City of Elmira, NY, Fisher Associates designed a roundabout to improve the operational efficiency and safety of a downtown 5-legged intersection. Our Landscape Architecture Studio contributed a distinctive gateway feature in the middle of the roundabout, inspired by local architectural landmarks, history, and the surrounding natural environment. The APWA award-winning Main Street Cultural Connector Project built a sense of local identity, fostered connectivity among neighborhoods, and prioritized safety for both vehicles and pedestrians. Sunlit Shelter: A House Above the Car Park In Leeds, atop the urban sprawl, A house emerges, standing tall, A primitive hut, as if in a dream, With a roof to shelter, or so it may seem. Above the car park, open to the sky, Where elements dance as time flies by, A testament to Laugier's vision grand, In architectural history, where it all began. But this house, it holds a secret deep, A nod to the past, where shadows creep, For on this site, where darkness fell, Once stood the prison of a Yorkshire tale. Where Peter Sutcliffe, the Ripper grim, Was first confined, his deeds so grim, But now, above the car park's din, Stands a house with a new story to begin. For it embraces the sun's warm light, With solar cells gleaming, shining bright, Harnessing energy, a beacon of hope, In a world where sustainability we must cope. So here it stands, amidst history's tale, A house atop a car park, strong and frail, A fusion of past and future, intertwined, In Leeds, where innovation's light shall shine. #SolarHutPoetry #UrbanArchitecture #SustainableLiving #LeedsLandscape #RenewableEnergy #ClimateConscious #ArchitecturalHistory #RooftopRefuge #acmespace #victoriagateleeds

One of the secrets to successful urbanism is understanding existing inherent characteristics of a place. Then, with a creative eye, reinterpreting those characteristics and elements for the contemporary condition. This helps in the development of a distinct sense of place over time. This #Plexhousing typology is characteristic of #Montreal and is a unique way of creating housing density, local identity, and fostering walkable streets. #urbanobservations

Downtown Diversity. US cities especially Chicago and Manhattan offer great learning in the urban phenomenon called Downtown. The ultra high value of land propels an organic skyscraper phenomenon leading to beautiful urban compositions being created from layers of architectural styles over a period stretching more than a century and this phenomenon is everchanging with new construction set in this urban drama. The phenomenon can be viewed from multiple vantage points, at close distance from streets, from window, from top , from far distance across the river. Glass facades create new depths and dimensions

One of the things I like best about this playground is how effective the simple customisations are - the run-way markings and control tower facade make the aviation theme obvious without having to spell it out or compromising the play value of the structure.
Here's a very tidy community playground at Hobsonville War Memorial Park designed by Bespoke Landscape Architects. The three-tower structure is designed to provide graduated levels of challenge for kids aged 3+ and we worked with Leigh Wilson to customize the tallest of the three with control tower facades and a runway scaling wall - a nod to Hobsonville's rich aviation history. Elephants! Elephants everywhere! A colleague, recounting a tale of his past, happened to mention a building (that was sort-of central to the story) that I’d never come across. Perhaps you have, but if not, let me introduce the Coventry Central Baths & Elephant. Yes. “…& Elephant.” I mean, you can see why. The planning department in Coventry must’ve been quite a place to work in the early 1960’s (not just for this remarkable thing. I happened across a review on here of a Ladybird edition dedicated to the city’s architectural vision, produced contemporaneously. Such vision. If a little flawed, human-scale-wise.) We still talk of ‘elephants in the room’ a lot. In fact, can’t think if a project that wasn’t shadowed by the elephantLurker. But can you imagine the conversations around the development in the home of Lady Godiva? Amazingly, the Coventry Central Baths & Elephant still stands, i.e. it hasn’t gone on fire. Yet. Tricky when the hulking thing is Grade II listed… but not impossible. Unlike many of its contemporary white elephants - which, as an aside, I also never knew the origin of, so accordingly I looked it up. Is an n old Thai custom of “gifting rare, expensive-to-keep (very, very pale) elephants to the reigning monarch.” Quite how the idea was transposed to buildings as a burdensome asset is less clear. UNTIL YOU SEE COVENTRY’S ELEPHANT, maybe? Seems quite obvious with hindsight. Anyway, the sad news is that no-one can see a use for the aging pachydermBuilding. Or rather, no-one appears to have the where-with-all to fund what really needs to happen- (imo) to re-open it as a sports hall. Hope someone can step in, before another amazing piece of the city-scape ends up in the elephants graveyard. Hat-tip to @MaxTuttle for the lovely story that kicked this off. #architecture #coventry #listedbuildings #elephants #sixtiesUK #planning #renovation #projects
