The 8 key takeaways from the European Green Steel Industry Summit in Antwerp- an excellent read from CRU Consulting. Click the link below for the full summary, including detailed info on each of the 8 points. 📓 The key takeaways: 1.) H2-DRI-EAF and scrap-based EAF production are the favored technologies for decarbonisation within Europe 2.) Scrap-based production alone will be insufficient to account for the growth in steel demand 3.) Securing sufficient green H2 will be critical to ensuring widespread H2-DRI-EAF deployment... 4.) ...along with access to high grade iron ore (>66% Fe) 5.) The cost of capital is a significant source of competitive advantage for steel companies 6.) The green premium will impact the profitability of low-carbon steel projects 7.) A standardized "green" steel definition and more transparent CO2 reporting are imperative 8.) European incumbents doubtful CBAM will be comprehensive enough to prevent carbon leakage #recycledmaterial #recycledmetal #scrap #steel #ferrous

How do international standards impact global trade for low-emissions steel? Today, ResponsibleSteel CEO Annie Heaton spoke as part of the World Trade Organization's Forging the Future panel on why credible, interoperable standards are essential to creating a level playing field and facilitating the trade of responsibly produced steel. Under the work of the Steel Standards Principles, we are already seeing progress on the alignment of how we measure steel emissions. Consistent and comparable emissions data will enable better trade and competition as well as financing for steel decarbonisation. ResponsibleSteel set out to facilitate complete comparability of emissions across steel sites and products worldwide, and if you want to compare the decarbonisation progress of steelmakers globally you need to level the playing field. Developing countries need to be able to grow their steel production while reducing emissions. So, when we define 'green steel' it's critical that we take into account the different economic and geographic resources countries have access to. Not all decarbonisation pathways will be the same or work at the same speed. But by 2030, every steel site should be operating at an emissions intensity lower than today's average at the very minimum if the global industry is to stay aligned with the 2050 commitments set out by the Paris Agreement. The debate on #decarbonsation is heating up in the #steel industry. Lots of questions on #greensteel, how a green steel premium should be defined and crucially what figure to put on it. CRU is at the 2nd European Green Steel Summit here in Düsseldorf. If you are too, get in touch. We at CRU have recently launched our Steel Emissions Abatement Value (CRUsteav). This is the key benchmark the industry is looking for, and can help stakeholders in the steel value chain explain the value of CO2 emissions reduction. If you want to learn how CRUsteav can help you make decisions - whether to determine how much to pay for low-emission steel, how viable investments are, or what future production technologies and commercial strategies to pursue - let me know!

📣This recent comprehensive study from Global Efficiency Intelligence and Solutions for Our Climate (기후솔루션) on the green steel economy, highlights promising prospects for the global steel industry! A few key conclusions from the authors of the study: 👉 The analysis compares the production costs of green steel H2-DRI-EAF with traditional methods in 7 major countries. 👉The result strengthens the need for green steel highlighting that the final price increase tends to be negligible for cars and buildings for example. 👉The competitiveness of green steel is significantly improved with the reduction in the cost of hydrogen and the introduction of a carbon price. Thus, the importance of clear carbon pricing mechanisms. 👉Strategies are proposed for governments, steelmakers, and user industries to accelerate the adoption of this clean technology. 👉Public procurement policies can be very effective to boost market demand and mitigate financial risks. 💚This independent study reinforces the message that a realistic transition to a decarbonized steel industry is essential to achieving our climate goals! #GreenIndustry #Decarbonization #GravitHy
