The Port of London Authority is calling on communities in Wandsworth, Barking and Dagenham, and Havering to share their ideas and ambitions for the River Thames in their area. All responses will be used by the PLA to inform its Tidal Thames Masterplan, which seeks to increase the river’s use for communities, businesses and recreation, as well as enhance its natural environment. Mike Atkins, Senior Planner at the PLA, explained: “We’re keen to give local people a chance to voice their opinions to guide future investment decisions that relate to the river in their area. Therefore, we want to encourage people who live in Wandsworth, Barking and Dagenham, and Havering, to consider the Tidal Thames Masterplan and put forward their thoughts and ideas on what should be included. 🌙 Safety After Dark: Placemaking Empty streets and poorly lit parks at night can quickly become intimidating, particularly for women and marginalised groups. By creating vibrant, well-designed places for both day and night, we can support alleviating these safety concerns women and other marginalised groups face. Take, for example, The Low Line project, an ongoing collaborative urban regeneration initiative developed by Better Bankside, Southwark Council, Team London Bridge Blue Bermondsey, Borough Market and The Arch Company. The project is bringing to life a previously underutilised Victorian railway viaduct through a variety of interventions, including: 💼 Creating business opportunities through investing in new uses for the arch space ✨ Hosting events, walks and activities 🖌️ Introducing new public artwork 🍃 Improving wayfinding, greening and creating new walking routes This innovative project delivers economic, cultural, social, and environmental improvements, creating a thriving community space and an environment where everyone can feel safe and valued, even at night. 🏢 Transforming disused industrial site could bring Scots into 'vibrant' new Edinburgh community The proposed project would see the transformation of a brownfield site on the city’s Gorgie Road into a “vibrant residential community”, delivering 63 properties, including 22 affordable homes split between social rent and mid-market rent. Insider Media Midlands Property Lunch: Green, Brown, Grey - Where Should We Build? 🏗️ 🏡 It was fascinating to hear from industry leaders such as Chris Webber (Barratt Homes), Andras Karpati (Cordia UK), Kate Tait (Keon Homes Limited), and Adam Willetts (Urban Splash) about the challenges and opportunities facing the development sector. Key takeaways from the discussions: ◾ The planning system remains a major challenge, with calls for more delegation to planning officers and increased resources for local authorities. ◾ Green belt vs brownfield – A nuanced debate about sustainability, population growth, and commuter challenges. While brownfield development is a priority, green belt conversations must be realistic. ◾ Inner-city regeneration is vital for addressing housing demand and attracting young people to urban areas, especially in Birmingham. ◾ Industry leaders stressed the need for certainty in planning to reduce delays and manage risks, as well as increasing support for affordable housing and infrastructure development. It’s clear there is a positive momentum for change, with the updated NPPF creating optimism, but there’s still much work to be done in aligning resources and policies to unlock the potential of our cities and regions.
