Bloomberg Newsletter Telegram Delivers a $5.9 Billion Warning to the Crypto World Toncoin’s warning The latest noteworthy crash in cryptocurrencies is the faceplant in the Toncoin token that’s often associated with the Telegram messaging app. The plunge was yet another reminder of the big risks in digital assets, hazards that may prevent them from achieving widespread user and regulatory acceptance. Toncoin is meant to be the token of choice for Telegram’s 950 million users, for everything from payments to blockchain-based games. France’s arrest of Telegram’s billionaire co-founder Pavel Durov cast a shadow over Toncoin and the associated TON blockchain: The token slid more than 20% in the immediate aftermath of his detention. Pantera Capital Management, Animoca Brands and Mirana Ventures are among more than a dozen firms that invested in Toncoin. Pantera is arguably the highest-profile backer given its status as one of the largest crypto venture-capital funds. Pantera invested in Toncoin at a 40% discount to the then prevailing market price and the position remains profitable, according to a person with direct knowledge of the matter, who requested anonymity since the matter is private. Discounted token purchases are one of the ways that sophisticated buyers like Pantera manage the risks around crypto. The tokens are held in Pantera’s $1.25 billion Blockchain Fund (IV), where the maximum weight for any single project is 20%, the person said.
