For the last couple of months I've been on an OECD - OCDE expert panel exploring the application of frontier technologies to civic participation. The hope: that frontier tech (like #AI, #VR, #blockchain, and more) can open doors for novel and adapted forms of engagement to help us face the challenges to democratic systems that we see around the world. There's many amazing people involved (particularly fantastic work from the OECD team running this), and together we've been looking at the existing practices, barriers, and hopes for the future for these applications. From this work, groups are being convened in Portugal, Spain, and the Netherlands to actively start experimenting with approaches, targeting real-world democratic problems faced by their communities. I'm not a techno-solutionist. These tools definitely aren't the answer to all our problems by themselves. However, in a world that's ever-more globalised, yet fractured; connected, yet polarised; and facing crises that seem to outpace our ability to confront them, I'm a big believer in the need for exploration to see what technology can offer our struggling systems and institutions. This is something I'm thinking about a lot at the moment, including another exciting project I'm working on (hopefully more info to share soon).
