CLIA Australasia Chair, Peter Little joined CLIA Cruise Line execs, Dave Humphreys, Lisa Teiotu, and Adam Radwanski, as well as ACA’s Jill Abel, on a panel at the recent Travel24 event in Sydney, to discuss what’s ahead for cruising over the next 24 months. In addition to highlighting the exciting opportunities ahead for cruising globally and in our region, Travel24 was also an opportunity to focus on some of the challenges facing our sector, and reinforce that cruise operations are often planned and booked several years in advance, and therefore it is critical that government work closely with industry to create an environment that delivers long-term regulatory certainty for cruising in this region. In our region, the cruise industry is worth more than $5.6 billion a year to communities around the coast, and cruise ships made almost 1,400 port calls around Australia in 2022-23, creating an economic impact that supports more than 18,000 Australian jobs. #wearecruise

Antigua Cruise Port recorded over 10,000 passengers in one day on January 4, 2024. Enchanted Princess brought 3,764 passengers while 3,297 arrived aboard her sister vessel, Caribbean Princess at Heritage Quay. At the Nevis Street Pier, Costa Pacifica arrived with 2,994 visitors bringing the day's total to 10,055. World Maritime Day 2024. Navigating the Future: Here’s to Safety First. World Maritime Day represents a moment to reflect on the role that Senior Seafarers play in driving this sector forward, and given this year’s theme, the need to put human sustainability, and therefore safety, first. Seafarers: The Backbone of Global Trade and Lifeblood of the Sector. There are over 1.6 million Seafarers at sea that we depend upon to keep our cargo secure, our guests safe, supply chains open and the global economy energised. Working in hazardous environments, often far from outside assistance, seafarers must be resilient, resourceful and ready to manage risk and handle all manner of emergencies. But with isolation and extended time away a toll is taken on their mental and physical health, and a risk is placed on their safety and ability to sustainably perform. Seafarer Sustainability: A Global Priority = A Safer Sector. While we understand the inherent risks of the maritime environment, the COVID-19 pandemic brought mental and physical challenges to the fore and growing recognition that we need to support Senior Seafarer sustainability to improve safety for all. Safety First V Safety Last. While we rely upon our Senior Seafarers to perform day in and day out, once afloat, there is little to no specialist support given to safeguarding their sustainability. The result? A downturn in performance and an increase in risk. Factors that see churn based costs rise, service reputation falter, and ultimately, the safety of all in jeopardy. Given the value of their role, the cost of replacement, and the safety / share value implications that stem from a lack of support, why continue to carry that risk? Here’s to Safety First. World Maritime Day is as much about today, as it is about “Navigating the future.” Let’s use this opportunity to address these risks, put “Safety First” and support those we rely upon today with specialist services that safeguard our collective future. ✈️✈️ - 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗻. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱. I was flying home this weekend from my best friend’s wedding in North Carolina, 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘣𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘺, and I was impressed with what I experienced on 𝘿𝙚𝙡𝙩𝙖 𝘼𝙞𝙧𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙨. As a business owner I am continually observing how others "do business." As I was prepping for an upcoming training called, 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘧𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘵 𝘣𝘺 𝘋𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯: 𝘋𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘖𝘶𝘳 𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘛𝘦𝘢𝘮 & 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘔𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘴, on my three hour and 40 minute flight from Atlanta to Phoenix, I overheard something really beautiful. The Delta flight attendant approached a passenger in front of me and said the following, "Thank you Mr. (can't remember his name) for being an elite status member with Delta Airlines. We not only appreciate your business, but know we are grateful for you and want you to know you are seen and you are appreciated." - 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝗮𝗮𝗮𝘁?!! Honestly, 𝘐 𝘧𝘦𝘭𝘵 𝘴𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘐 𝘧𝘦𝘭𝘵 𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 in that moment for simply hearing this interaction. 💙💙 I was not only impressed with what the flight attendant said, but I also appreciated that an organization as large as Delta Airlines, still ensures these small, intentional interactions take place in their BIG business. As you all know, I talk a lot on how small, yet intentional interactions make for big impact and how every interaction we have is an opportunity to build, maintain, or break down relationships and ultimately the culture of our organization. Thus, my closing question for you all, is what intentional action will you do today, tomorrow, this week to build the culture of your organization? People matter. Attitudes matter. This was never more clear than on a recent business trip to AZ. Because of scheduling I flew out on American Airlines and returned on Delta. Same Route. Both planes were similar, the flights were all on time and both legs went smoothly so operationally there was little difference. But there was a NOTICABLE difference in the attitude of the employees. American Airlines employees were downright grumpy, surly and clearly not happy. They didn't want to be there. The Delta employees were doing the same exact job, in the same circumstances but had a smile on their faces and clearly made an effort to make the rigors of flying as friendly as possible. In our business client service is extremely important. “You Don't Need a Title to Be a Leader”! During my recent 14-hour transatlantic flight with a national carrier, I witnessed remarkable leadership skills and service levels in action, courtesy of flight attendant Tenzin. In the section of the aircraft where I sat, more than half of the passengers were elderly, several arrived in wheelchairs, including my 80-year-old mother. Tenzin displayed extraordinary patience and compassion, tending to even the smallest and most unconventional requests from these elderly passengers. Whether it was helping them fasten their seat belts, warming up home-cooked meals in the microwave, or offering reassurance to anxious seniors, she handled each situation with grace and empathy. Throughout the entire flight, Tenzin maintained a high level of service and empathy towards the elderly passengers, while marshalling and supporting her junior crew members. Intrigued by her dedication, I asked Tenzin how she managed to accommodate these requests when it might have been easier to say no. Her response was profound: "When I go to sleep at night, I want to rest easy knowing I did everything I could to assist my passengers. Every day, I find happiness in knowing I gave my best." When I asked her about the possibility of passengers not appreciating her efforts or taking her service for granted, she calmly replied, "Yes, I know that happens. But I'm not concerned about that. What matters most to me is that I know I provided the best service I could." Tenzin attributed her selflessness to her upbringing and her family's strong values of service to others. She might not be the CEO of this national carrier, but leaders in the field like Tenzin, who exceed their duties with selflessness and compassion, deserve recognition. They remind us that true leadership is about actions and character, transcending mere titles.
