The health care industry in the United States accounts for up to 10% of our country’s greenhouse gas emissions. Maranda C. Ward, Ed.D, MPH Happy National Public Health Week! Today's theme revolves around climate change! Along with being one of the world's current most pressing public health threats, climate change disproportionately impacts low-income communities as well as communities of colors due to a continued lack of focus towards their health and environmental factors such as pollution that may impact the space they live. Through changes to one's own actions, such as buying sustainably and becoming an advocate for climate change regulation and people's health, as well as systematic changes, such as the transfer to renewable energy sources and investments in climate-friendly transportation, climate change can be fought back against and our future preserved. 🌍 The Paradox of Public Health Solutions and Climate Change 🌿 Addressing the climate crisis through public health interventions presents a complex paradox. While certain health solutions aim to protect and improve public health, they may inadvertently exacerbate climate change. For example, the increased use of air conditioning to combat heatwaves can lead to higher greenhouse gas emissions. To create a sustainable future, it's essential to balance public health needs with environmental sustainability. Read more about this paradox and explore potential solutions in this insightful article: https://lnkd.in/gixi8X3G 🌱✨ #ClimateChange #PublicHealth #Sustainability #EnvironmentalHealth #ClimateAction

Join us in this critical dialogue to safeguard our health, climate, and future. The event will highlight the interconnected threats of air pollution and climate change, advocating for urgent action. Key discussions include a just transition to renewable energy, robust infrastructure for active transport, and cleaner cooking technologies. We'll explore strategies from environmental and human rights movements to organize for clean air and a sustainable environment—integral to both climate change mitigation and public health. The session will present Clean Air NDC Scorecard findings, emphasizing the integration of air quality into nationally determined contributions (NDCs) and policy opportunities at national and international levels.

State, Tribal and local action is vital to deliver on EPA’s commitment to reduce climate pollution and achieve net-zero emissions. Innovative measures contained in the selected Climate Pollution Reduction Grant applications were developed with input from local communities, and are expected to: - Benefit public health - Reduce energy burden for lower-income Americans - Improve climate resilience - Provide workforce and economic development #ClimatePollution #InflationReductionAct

Today, we released the 25th annual "State of the Air" report which found too many communities are still waiting for clean air. Nevada experienced more days of unhealthy ozone levels, and significant - if not - the highest levels of particle pollution reported. Key findings: • Washoe and Clark County are 2 out of 30 counties in the US with failing grades for all three categories of pollutant. • Las Vegas and Reno land on all three of the Top 25 most polluted cities list in the U.S. for ozone, 24-hour, and annual PM levels. • 95% of Nevada residents live in a county with at least one failing air quality grade. We do have good news – more decisionmakers are recognizing our air and climate crises and taking action to reduce unhealthy emissions contributing to our ozone and particle challenges. The transportation sector generates the most greenhouse gases in Nevada, and recently there has been important action at the federal and local level to address this. From recently finalized federal clean air protections, state zero-emission vehicle policies and local climate action planning – these actions get at the heart of improving our air quality and saving lives. On today's #WorldHealthDay, we're looking at how integrating air pollution & health impacts into climate transparency frameworks helps fight climate change & protect public health. Discover how to practically achieve this using guidance developed by ICAT and the Climate & Clean Air Coalition. Benefits of Integration: ✅Development of comprehensive emission inventories: Track greenhouse gases, short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs), and air pollutants using a consistent methodology. ✅Policy evaluation: Assess how policies and measures simultaneously impact air pollution and climate change. ✅Health benefits quantification: Quantify the health burdens associated with air pollution and the health benefits achieved through cleaner air. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/e6ZTMXbb
