Picture this. You're a firefighter doing your secondary search of a large residential fire. You go into the basement and find 4 victims. All incapacitated. You've lost your partner. Your control module starts ringing...you're low on air. Using your TIC and listening to your radio, you know that the fire is only getting bigger. What do you do? For some new recruits, this would likely be as overwhelming as it can get. You might even forget what room of the house you're in and which way you're facing. Last year, this happened to one of XpertVR's trainees... What unfolded? The trainee spent the rest of their air searching for the door to get out of the garage. They were confused and should have been searching for the stairs out of the basement. This led to them blacking out and a Mayday call. Luckily, this was all virtual. The recruit removed their VR headset, and their training officer gave a thorough debrief on what went wrong and what to do next time. The recruit was then able to decompress and, when they were ready, go back into a new scenario. This sort of hands-on training, which leads to high retention rates, is only possible for firefighters in live burn environments. For most departments, that's one day out of the year if they're lucky. Well, not anymore. With VR, firefighters can train in unlimited scenarios back to back without any set-up time or waste, ensuring they are truly prepared for their next live burn experience when it comes around. Or, more importantly, fully prepared for when it happens in the real world. How are you ensuring your fire department is prepared? #firefighting #firstresponder #virtualreality #publicsafety

Should autism or anxiety keep anyone from getting a job? Obviously: 𝗻𝗼 ❌ Can 𝗩𝗥 help them get 𝗷𝗼𝗯𝘀? Maybe! We are trying to figure it out. We are currently involved in two EU projects related to helping young people enter the job market - one of them with a special focus on autism and anxiety. See links below. This week, we had representatives from the Danish Employment Agency visiting to talk about how VR can help these people. They got to try some of our training simulators, and we had a great talk about how to create similar training simulators for job interviews. We received great input that we can use when building the VR experiences for the EU projects. The desired outcome is to make it easier for young people to enter the European job market. We are confident that letting these young people practice stressful situations like a job interview in a safe, controlled setting can give them the practical skills and the confidence they need to land their first job. If you want to stay up-to-date in these project, make sure to hit the follow button. What Is The Purpose Of VR&E? Helping disabled veterans prepare for and retrain for new careers is largely what the VR&E program is all about. It helps disabled veterans get a new leg up on life with: Comprehensive college or vocational training into a new career, Funding for a new business, or Finding a new job in your current career. It can also help provide benefits to veterans who are too disabled to work but who want to pursue a longtime hobby they can no longer perform due to their disabilities. This vocational program is amazing, but VA has been known to struggle when it comes to clearly informing veterans about what VR&E can do. So I created this article to give a high level view of what the program is all about and what it can do. VR&E, sometimes referred to as Chapter 31 or Voc Rehab or Veteran Readiness (minus Employment), among other nicknames, is all about helping veterans with a service-connected disability connect the dots to qualify for, gain, and maintain employment in a suitable job. I remember how much I wanted to be a vet as a child. That image went away when I realized it involved being "good" at science, and also, that I wanted to be a WNBA player and a lawyer and Jane Goodall and, and, and. Really, what I wanted was to be close to animals. This post that randomly showed up on my feed seems to support my layman's theory that youth envision themselves as part of a web of care, especially for those made vulnerable. Kids just want to help and be around animals whether as vets or farmers or zookeepers or whatever industry they've heard about that lets them connect with animals, because they don't see animals as outside of their realm of relational proximity and care. It shows their--our--innate empathy and need for meaningful connections with both the human and other-than-human worlds. Their curious, imaginative nature. Qualities that alienating, capitalist life steals from us, mortifying us. It's why the work that farmed animal sanctuaries do is so important. It legitimizes care and advocacy for "food" animals in a way that addresses the contradiction of youth wanting to help/care for animals with their realization that the main option they have is to hurt animals or otherwise submit to an industry of harm and violence toward animals. I love the community programs at Rancho Compasión in West Marin, California, which allows kids to connect with animals, the land, and nourishing plant foods and lets them grow their radical imaginations for a more cooperative, just future. And it's why at LEAP (Leaders for Ethics, Animals, and the Planet), our programs guide youth who are in the stages of thinking about what kind of future they envision themselves being a part of (high school), by partnering with animal sanctuaries who teach a robust educational curriculum that prepares them to be advocates and changemakers for animals and planet. And shoutout to folks like fellow LEAP board member Crystal Heath who prove that you can be a veterinarian and fight for right relations with our non-human animal kin within the profession.
I'm currently writing a chapter about children's desire to become vets, and two statistics stood out for me. For children in the UK aged 7-11, 'vet' was the third most popular career choice. (Drawing the Future report, 2018). In 2021, 45% of UK vets leaving the profession had been in practice less than 4 years (RCVS Workforce Summit, 2021). Obviously this is complicated and there are multiple factors at play, but it is worrying. How do we get from 'I want to be a vet when I grow up' to 'I want out'? Most importantly, how do we bring down that second figure? I think it will take a range of changes, but what is most important?

Systems Designer and Technical Designer | Gameplay Narrative and Levels | 10 years experience | Single player campaigns | Multiplayer | Live service
In the Aftermath of #SeptemberSurge 🎰 I am one of the final candidates for 2 roles now, with 3 of 9 active interviews sending regrets and the the other 4 quietly sitting out in the past few weeks. I also have started talking with 4 new studios, as I cannot afford to stop until there is an offer and my green #opentowork banner comes down. The final payment of government employment insurance benefits to support me and my family during unemployment was deposited in the past week, too. My total application count reached 17 in September, which also resulted in half of my active interviews during this month. Subtracting those 4 applications plus 3 additional immediate rejections, leaves me with applications for 10 studios that I have not heard from, yet, or have already booked me for initial screening appointments in October. 📞 Almost 60% of my September applications alone resulted in scheduling a first phone call. ✔ I completed 13 calls and panel interviews. I finished one design test quickly, and the other I had to <painfully> abandon; after 2.5 weeks of all my extra hours outside childcare and interviews went into it. ...but this is all a lot of work. I know you are working through similar struggles, too. ⚡ Once again I'm in awe of your powers if you've achieved 30+ recent applications or side-door convos with studios in the last 4-8 weeks! That's regardless of your success rate or other numbers. Always take breaks as needed, but I know you can get through this. So keep making the best decisions for you, even if that means you ignore the state of the #gamedev industry. One last reason to celebrate with me today. 👾 Earlier this week at UnrealFest, the playable arcade cabinet version of my game Broken Wing was on display for the public. I am grateful to Ed Bennett, Robert Percival, and Dan Johnson for troubleshooting many of the fellows' games so they would work on the machines... instead of spending that time enjoying the conference! And also for capturing some evidence of Broken Wing being played for my amusement.
