Good policy is grounded in the best available science. As the United States focuses on national priorities, several Grand Challenges networks have created briefs to inform policy. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eg9X_Zac #Up4theChallenge #SocialWork #MacroSW Grand Challenges for Social Work

The most effective policies are those shaped by the voices of the people they impact. Participatory policy-making ensures that community members are not just beneficiaries but active contributors to the decisions that affect their lives. By involving diverse stakeholders in the policy development process, organizations foster transparency, build trust, and create more sustainable and culturally relevant solutions. Organizations should work together with the people to bridge the gap between policymakers and communities, empowering everyone to have a seat at the table.

The National Innovative Communities Conference could be held anywhere. Aren't all communities looking for ways to better serve their populations? Maybe. But holding it in the Inland Empire sends a message: The IE is larger than 26 of the states in the US, and yet is one of the places that receives the least amount of investment. Because of this, the work and accomplishments happening here have been the result of collaboration, sharing of ideals and determination, and relationships built to cross political divides and really focus on the well-being of our community. The message? If we can do it here, you can do it anywhere. #NationalInnovativeCommunitiesConference #CommunityBetterment

Great insight here from David Jubb on the power of citizen-led decision making. We have been working with David and Citizens in Power over the past year or so in the co-design and delivery of #JuryforJoy in #WestCumbria through #EveryoneHere. The potential for these process to redefine the status quo (ie. who makes decisions and in whose interest ?) Especially in terms of cultural policy is both transformative and revelatory..
"It's not just who makes decisions, it's how they're made. "We are all accustomed to the way that groups wield power. We navigate our lives as members of various groups, from families and social clubs to political parties and online communities. We have all experienced the influence of decision-making groups from the playground at school to the dynamics in our workplaces to the way political groups operate in town halls and parliaments across the UK." 🗞️ An excerpt from a new blog from David Jubb, Co-Director of Citizens In Power. Self-determination is now recognised as a fundamental human right. At its heart, it is about ensuring that different communities whose existence may not correlate with existing national borders, are able to be governed according to their chosen custom and democratic will. #SelfDetermination

Much of the findings from this report re-iterate the work that we were progressing back in 2019-2023 through the Local Thriving Communities reforms. Deliberative & participatory processes work but only if they are backed up with meaningful accountability mechanisms and effective power sharing. #policy #innovation #reform #accountability #powersharing #Reframedrelationship #wellbeing

At Carnegie UK we have published the findings from our Engaging Democracy programme. This was a fascinating bit of work, with multiple strands of activity. Bit of a long post follows with key insights. We talked both to those that had recently commissioned and/or run participatory or deliberative democratic processes as well as those who had participated in them. We wanted to understand if and how these democratic innovations contribute to Democratic Wellbeing. What we found was really interesting. Deliberative and participatory initiatives can and do positively contribute to people feeling like they have voice and choice in the decisions that affect them. But (and this is the really important bit) only if they are designed well and backed up by meaningful accountability mechanisms. This can often be overlooked. To harness this and address these areas of concern, we want to ensure that policy makers working on these issues focus on: 1) Increasing the quality of participatory democracy by establishing minimum standards of delivery & accountability. 2) Build the democratic literacy of decision makers to help them to better share power with those working at the most local level. 3) Seize the major global moment for democracy in 2024 to focus on improving our Democratic Wellbeing (data shows us in a bad state). I want to say a huge thank you from all of us at Carnegie UK to all those we spoke to, to help inform this work. Both those that had commissioned or run these kinds of projects and former participants of them gave generously of their time, knowledge and experience. Finally, a big thank you to our brilliant Democratic Wellbeing Champions that helped inform this project and all the great organisations that continue to do vital work to develop, highlight and mainstream new approaches to improve our democracy. The Response Ability of the Many (December 2023). In my new blog I argue that the crushing response-ability of the many is falling on the shoulders of the few. Whether the few are good actors or bad, this democratic crisis underpins all other crises. https://lnkd.in/eVTJQ2GQ

The biggest problem with public life today is how it is largely conducted behind closed doors. Decisions about the issues that affect our lives are being made by a small number of people in an even smaller number of institutions That isn’t good enough. Public life shouldn’t be something a few people practice and the rest of us try to influence. It should be a collective endeavour. That’s why our goal as Public Life is to build a movement of people and organisations, working together to reimagine public life across the UK. That starts with a shared belief – that those facing social issues should have the power to create the solutions they need. If you believe what we believe, join us. We're looking for pioneering organisations to work with us on programmes that empower people affected by social issues to invent the low-cost solutions they and their communities need. And we're looking for talented innovators to lead these programmes who are inspired by working at the forefront of public-led innovation. If that sounds like you, find out more and get in touch today at https://lnkd.in/ezza3QnU #publiclife #socialinnovation #community Dave Allan Sarah Weller Carolina Skoog Matt Black
