The transformation of Riyadh Many of the major events coming to Saudi Arabia in the next decade, including Expo 2030, will take place in the capital city of Riyadh, so efforts are underway to ensure that it is smart city efficient. “We have to expedite the development of Riyadh, especially with the vision of the Crown Prince. He wants to double the population of Riyadh in the next ten to fifteen years. This cannot be done without smart services because when you double a city, you need to double infrastructure and utilities,” says Maher Shirah, Director General of Smart Riyadh from the Royal Commission for Riyadh City. “We are working aggressively to have the best smart services that support each person.” Working with the Ministry of Municipal Rural Affairs and Housing, SDAIA is ensuring Riyadh is running efficiently using AI models. “We have deployed a fleet of dashcams that scan the city twice a week to identify visual pollution in the city and guide operational efforts,” explains Sattam Alsubaie, CEO of Smart City Center of Excellence in SDAIA. “This is enabled by the developed Al models and algorithms that continuously detect visual pollution elements, such as construction waste, forgotten jersey barriers, misplaced advertisements, broken billboards, and graffiti.” When it comes to traffic, SDAIA works with the National Traffic Safety Committee to detect dangerous spots for accidents. Riyadh has a number of new districts in the pipeline. “How do we make sure that the new districts and areas are aligned with our strategy of creating the best quality of life? We created the Smart District Guidelines and identified the essential services or hot topics that we need to focus on and roll out in Riyadh: smart mobility, smart sustainability, and smart safety and security,” adds Shirah. For those who doubt the kingdom’s rapid smart technology know-how, Shirah invites them to go to Saudi Arabia and see it for themselves. “One image is worth a thousand words, so seeing is believing,” he stresses. “At the end of the day, we live in the same world, and it doesn’t make any sense to develop in one place and not in another. Collaborating with others in the Middle East, Europe, and the West makes not only a smart city or a smart country, but a smart world.” As Riyadh prepares for the next decade, Shirah notes that quality-of-life projects are now in full swing. According to the director general, King Salman Park is bigger than Central Park in New York. Its Sports Boulevard will stretch from southwest Riyadh through the center of the city to the northeast of the city for bikers and runners. There will be outdoor gyms, as well as a football field and basketball courts. The Riyadh Green Initiative will plant a million trees. And the new metro system is being designed to service a city with a population of eight million.
