Got to love it when that happens! You know that time when you’ve chatted to someone on linked in, then you get to meet them in ‘real life’ and you’re on the same wavelength? 🏉 I got to meet the fantastic Charlie Beech (Front Row Support) today at a great networking group, hosted by Mark Burns (Coach’s Office Group), and that’s exactly what happened. The networking was held in the most amazing venue, The Motorist, and we had some free networking time and a cracking buttie before we settled down for Mark and Charlie’s ‘armchair chat’. ✨They chatted about the crossovers between sport and business, drawing from Charlie’s background as a pro rugby player and his work now helping owners develop their businesses. Some great nuggets! ✳️ Charlie talked about the importance of standards in a team or company. If one player/employee starts to slack, and it’s not picked up, the danger is that others can start lowering their standards. So it’s so important to have a group accountability and joint vision to help reduce this. ✳️ I loved the point about team culture. Charlie talked about Sean Edwards, when he was a defence coach at Wasps, instilling the ‘Blitz Defence’, where the whole team defended proactively. Charlie talked about the need for everyone to buy in to the concept, otherwise gaps would appear and it then was deemed a ‘rubbish tactic’. The point was about bringing people on board who bought into the culture or concept, rather than folk who would disrupt the ship too much. ✳️ I final nugget (although there were loads more) was Mark and Charlie’s chat about the Pygmalian effect, where high expectations lead to improved performance and low expectations to lower performance. Charlie chatted about how just being called a ‘star player’ can help drive a player on. This raises the importance of how we talk to players and employees, and the effect of coach’s and employer’s interactions with their people. Really lovely to meet so many new faces and hear Charlie’s stories. And a proper good chat after too! We are not a family. We are more like a professional sports team. It's an interesting paradigm shift. But, I believe, an appropriate one. I always cringe a bit when I hear leaders describe their culture like a family. Let's be honest. Would you take 9 months off work to care for a sick co-worker? In most cases, no way. You may contribute to a fund to support their care. Or show other signs of support. But YOUR family comes first. And we reserve those types of measures for family. So, let's call it what it is. It is far more akin to a professional sports team. A group of (hopefully) high performing, well compensated professionals assembled to achieve one common goal. We practice. We watch tape (figuratively speaking). We rely on each other. We support each other. We have expectations of each other. We take care of ourselves, so we can be there for each other. We win together. And yes, we sometimes lose together. We are not family. We are a professional sports team. When you unlock this mentality amongst the group, things really start to happen. Reed Hastings & Patty McCord penned Netflix's cultural manifesto several year's ago. It changed the way many think about culture in the Silicon Valley, and across the world. What did we do at our Team Offsite? Here's a glimpse - 1. Networking: Our Sales, Training, and Support teams joined forces to strengthen our collaboration, because we hardly get a chance to meet during our travel. 2. Trying a new Team Activity: We dove into a unique activity blending sustainability and tech. Because after all, our internal team gets the first chance to experience our cutting edge programs. 3. Getting Active and Competitive: Sports aren't just for fun (though we had loads of that!). They reveal our true selves and foster camaraderie like nothing else can. And that's why we picked up Olympics challenge. 4. Reaffirming Our Core Values: Taking time to revisit and reaffirm them was a reminder of our unique identity. Because that's our differentiator. Our offsite wasn't just about escaping the office—it was about strengthening bonds, fostering growth, and recharging our collective spirit.
