The next season of Anywhere League starts this week, and I want to encourage you, if you have remote or hybrid team members (or even if you don't), to consider trying it out. https://lnkd.in/e3hRbd8h It's the best team-building I've done, because it's directed (unlike virtual happy hour events, there's no dead air or awkward scrambling for something to talk about); it happens regularly (so the team builds cohesion over time); you can pick a time during your work day (so nobody has to make special arrangements); folks get to work together as a team to compete (good-naturedly) against other organizations (all the benefits of a sport without excluding anyone); everyone gets a chance to shine (because the topics vary wildly from week to week); and you really get to know your teammates as people. There's nothing to ship, and nobody has to travel, so it also has a lower carbon cost than most any other organized team-building event, without leaving out anyone who can't safely meet in-person. And it's FUN! Kathleen, the host, always makes sure everyone has a good time and learns something. I was only at Coiled for 6 months, but in that time I built friendships outside of my immediate work team because I played in Anywhere League. (Some of us even kept playing together, in a free-range team, these last few seasons.) Knowing my coworkers better as people made me more willing to ask them when I had work questions, and I think it made them more willing to reach out to me, too. It removed that hesitance some of us feel, when we're remote, to "bother" coworkers who would otherwise be virtual strangers to us. I don't mean to hate on the "everyone paint together" or virtual tastings or other one-off team-building events. Those can be really nice (:cough: generally rather expensive) treats for a team—I'd be genuinely delighted if my organization would pay for me to do virtual coffee-tasting and/or to paint a bird online with my coworkers! Delighted enough to make time outside the work day, for sure. But the recurring, one hour during a work day, no preparation required, "we're competing together" nature of Anywhere League makes it really hard to beat. #TeamBuilding #remote #events #team
