We are working on the ISHS Assay Office Assessment, Rehabilitation, and Restoration project. Built in 1870, it is one of only three National Historic Landmark buildings in Idaho! Check out this Idaho Statesman article to learn more about the 100+ year-old artifacts uncovered. ⚠️ All too often, the true value of a heritage geospatial survey is overlooked. Regularly, some architects, conservation professionals, and heritage entities opt for the cheapest quote without considering the long-term consequences of skipping best practice methods. Historic England's Geospatial Survey guidance is ignored most of the time by professionals working on heritage projects⚠️ 🔭🙈At Terra Measurement, we see this all too often. The use of best practice survey methods, as clearly defined in Historic England's Geospatial Survey Specifications for Cultural Heritage 2024, is crucial. A properly executed geospatial survey ensures the accuracy required and informed repair or preservation of heritage buildings for years ahead, and avoiding costly mistakes down the road. 👀🙈 ℹ️Cutting corners on price might seem like a cost-saving, but in the world of heritage buildings, those cuts can lead to lost time, wasted resources, and irreversible damage in the case of retrofit projects.ℹ️ 🤓 Those who understand this importance gain additional resources and understanding of their building or structure project. In addition, the owner or estate benefits AND gains a resource that can be used for decades. 🤓 🏆Let’s raise the bar and give our heritage the care it deserves. Proactive collaboration and communication with your Geospatial Survey Consultants are key 🏆 #HeritageSurveys #GeospatialSurveying #BestPractice #CulturalHeritage #HistoricEngland #SurveyMatters #TerraMeasurement SPAB Wren300 Square Mile Churches Square Mile Churches - Diocese of London

Is the practice of #historicpreservation too dogmatic? Does there need to be more gray area? Does it need to be more accessible? When the standards preclude a historic property from being adapted for reuse are they making it more likely that those structures will be demolished? Would love to hear from my preservation peeps - discuss!

To all who are involved in development and property modification, especially where ground disturbance is required for commercial, residential, and infrastructure expansion/upgrade purposes within the US, which includes the State of Michigan and Ann Arbor-Washtenaw County, you may have been egregiously misinformed as to your responsibility to comply with many State and Federal laws that guarantee that historic and archaeological resources and places are identified, studied, mitigated and/or protected from adverse effects from construction and landscape modification. Penalties for noncompliance are strict and costly, which include fines, project sanctions, and incarceration:. Some recent project planning in this county has accumulated a myriad of serious offenses to these laws: National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 https://lnkd.in/eKwJnteb Archeological and Historic Preservation Act of 1974 https://lnkd.in/eCpFgw34 https://lnkd.in/epC95RcE Archaeological Resources Protection Act of 1979 https://lnkd.in/eh-4-yq7 Michigan State historic protection-preservation laws are not limited to those listed on this webpage: https://lnkd.in/eeVqsp-6 In one shocking case, the staging area for construction of the ARPA 2021 Ypsilanti infrastructure project of 2022-2023 caused a burial field associated with the historic Second Baptist Church to collapse ~60 cm, which was masked by refill of the field with sediments excavated from an unspecified location that are replete with decomposed human remains, urn fragments, wooden stakes, and textile scraps: https://lnkd.in/ejNykiuG Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) overlaps historic resource protection purview, and is also systematically violated. In 2024, clarifications were enacted that compel projects to understand the scope of Federal compliance includes aspects of private construction planning, especially when any funding or subsidization involves Federal materials, infrastructure, materials, or property domains https://lnkd.in/emPfaHqB Michigan burial protection laws alone require implementation of efforts to identify and circumvent graves, which in most cases qualify as historic-archaeological by chronological definition: https://lnkd.in/e2tyfbiw

11 Days of 11 Most: Hudson-Athens Lighthouse, Athens, New York Opened in 1874, the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse used to be one of several “middle-of-the-river” lighthouses on the Hudson River. Now it’s one of only two left standing. The lighthouse was built to guide vessels around a shallow area in the river near Athens and Hudson, New York, and continues to serve as a navigation aid today, helping commercial and leisure mariners safely navigate this portion of the Hudson River. It is also open to the public as a museum, welcoming visitors and schoolchildren to learn about the lightkeepers and their families who lived in the building up until the 1940s. However, the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse may not stand for much longer. Erosion caused by ever larger and deeper commercial ships traveling the Hudson River, as well as ice flows, tides, and currents, has significantly damaged the 200 underwater wood pilings that support the lighthouse, and engineering reports indicate the building is at risk of collapse within three years if no action is taken. Preservation challenges only compound as roof leaks cause plaster damage, shifting causes facade cracks, metal gutters and railings rust, and timbers supporting the fog bell are weakened by rot. An estimated $7.5 million in funding is needed to stabilize the pilings and address preservation needs. Since 1982, the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse Preservation Society has worked to preserve the lighthouse and operate its museum. They have begun a campaign to raise funding to restore the lighthouse and install an underwater steel curtain which would keep it from collapsing into the river. Significant additional funding and partnerships will be needed to protect this iconic beacon on one of America’s great rivers. Pictured: Hudson-Athens Lighthouse. Photos courtesy David Oliver

🌐 Case Study: Navigating the Past to Legalise a Historic Hall Sheldon, one of Definition’s LCS was involved in breathing new life into a historic rural hall that had been mostly dormant since the 1930s. Here's a snapshot of how he tackled the challenge: 🔍 The Challenge: Sheldon was tasked with separating the hall from the surrounding farmland. This required pinpointing the location of the septic tank and sewer lines, ensuring they were clear of the new boundaries. To trace the ancient earthenware pipes, a skilled subcontractor was enlisted to assist with navigating the underground maze. 📸 Behind the Scenes: Check out the photo below which captures our subcontractor skilfully tracing the sewer line, deploying a trace wire down the historic pipes. The process was not without its quirks, given the hall's long hiatus! The team also utilised cutting-edge scanning technology above-ground to precisely locate the sewer line and ensure it was in the clear. Using a combination of tradition and technology! 🤝 Result and Lessons Learnt: Thanks to the collaboration of our amazing team, the project was a success. We not only confirmed the location of the ancient pipes but also brought everyone on to the same page for the hall's future. Sometimes, bringing history into the present requires a blend of traditional expertise and modern tools. We're proud to have played a part in preserving the past while paving the way for a vibrant future for this rural gem. 🌟 #PreservingHistory #RuralRevival #ProjectSuccess #TeamWork #EngineeringFeats #HistoricRenovation
