With the start of semester 2 of my Master's course, a reflection on the first semester is due. Since the beginning of the course, I have taken up learning German as a Hobby. Dedicating 2 hours a day for 3 months has pushed my progress faster than I thought I could ever learn a language. My ultimate goal is to find an Architecture internship in Germany. Allowing me to feel closer to my heritage and have the opportunity to practise my new language skills. I've quickly progressed from not knowing much about the language to almost completing A1.1. I also received back two of my module grades during the Christmas break, to which I passed! Writing two essays in 3 months is definitely a new experience! but one that I fully enjoyed. For the module 'Design Agency', my essay consisted of a research essay, a designed response and an overall look at my engagement. The idea of the essay was to investigate an 'artefact of the Oxford state' (to which I chose the Oxford Electric scooters). The essay would design a research project and had to exhibit specific features that followed the given marking criteria. For the second essay for the module 'History and Theory' within my Interior Architecture specialisation, we had to write an essay about a 'room or house' from a list of 12. Within this essay, we had to analyse the rooms and refer to furnitecture, spatial qualities and atmosphere. For this essay, I chose the Muller House but Adolf Loos. Throughout this essay, I had to contextualise the house and Loos' historical architectural moment, while also touching on different senses and making the reader feel as though they were walking through the house. Starting the next semester, I look forward to all the new challenges ahead, the late-night studies and the countless books I've had to borrow and lug home with me on the train... haha Auf das neue jahr! <3

Durian Catchers A durian orchard client has asked us to design a pavilion for small events like weddings and to find a solution to protect visitors from falling durians and branches. He suggested a covered walkway, but we felt that it might negatively impact the view of the orchard. Additionally, he wanted the cover to have a minimal ground impact. We suggested something light that does not obstruct the view of the lush orchard. Our proposed solution: 1. A steel platform with grating and perforated balustrades that blend lightly with the lush orchard background. 2. A series of striking canopies that mark the pathways and gathering spaces. Visitors often ask the owner what these structures are for and whether they are meant to catch durians. They guessed it right! These striking and playful or curious-looking canopies become the identity of the orchard. We are looking for Interns or Part 1 Assistant Architects.

Introducing, Grace! Our new Graduate Spatial Designer! It was a pleasure to welcome Grace to the team last year - she has brought fresh conceptual thinking and innovation to all her work here. Welcome to the team 🤝 'My name is Grace Newbigging; I am originally from the Scottish Borders but have called Edinburgh home for the best part of a decade. I have recently graduated in Interior & Spatial Design at Edinburgh Napier University. Through my time studying I gained experience in urban community-based design, and I grew to love all things landscape, urban and public realm design. Exploring outcomes within design that benefitted the mental well-being of users was something I always aimed to integrate into my work, and I look forward to continuing these themes throughout my career.' How has your course in interior and spatial design prepared you for working in practise? 'My course gave me a great insight into the multiple facets architecture and design can fall under. It allowed me to explore many different aspects of design and helped me settle on landscape architecture as my desired end goal. My course also taught me to experiment with my own style and preferences. Encouraging exploration into my various strengths (and weaknesses!) allowed me to prepare for the various roles one takes when working in a practise.' What is your favourite HarrisonStevens project that you have worked on so far and why? 'Hard to pick a favourite when each project I’ve worked on so far have all been so vastly different from one another! I’d have to say Dundee Terrace & Newcraighall have been my favourites so far. It’s been amazing working on projects within Edinburgh, being able to see progress within my own city is a great feeling. Working on both projects has shown me what its like to jump into an ongoing project and experience a project from day one.' What learning and development opportunities have you had during your time with HarrisonStevens? 'Coming into HarrisonStevens with a slightly different background was a daunting thought but joining the team and seeing the collaboration between the entire team is incredibly encouraging. Every day I am learning something new, whether its technical skills or learning the intricacies of how a project is run. It's not just about physical structures; it's about how those structures affect us every day.  Our homes, or the absence of them, and the spaces we inhabit can deeply impact our well-being. Architects carry a big responsibility in shaping these environments, knowing that their work directly influences people's lives. It's both a challenge and a privilege to be part of this process.    Q: What makes Project Luong unique? Why do you choose to work here?  Project Luong stands out for its authentic atmosphere. In my brief experience here, I've sensed a deep bond among everyone and a dedication to thoughtful design. What really attracted me to apply for the internship is the diversity of the firm, both in its people and projects. It's rare to find a company that not only recognizes the importance of diversity in the architectural field but actively embraces it to enhance design quality.    Q: How can designers better serve their clients?  The relationship between designers and clients is crucial, and one that I am just beginning to learn. It's a two-way street where both sides share the responsibility of understanding the project's requirements, the stakeholders involved, and the context surrounding it all. As designers, our role demands empathy and a deep comprehension of the client's vision to ensure we collaborate effectively and create designs that resonate with everyone involved.    Q: What are some of the biggest challenges designers face in their projects?  One of the biggest challenges designers face is balancing the needs of different stakeholders, including the client, the environment, users, and the surrounding community. This requires finding innovative solutions and effectively managing the diverse requirements of all involved.     Q: Who has been your biggest influence?  I think my mom has been my biggest influence. Growing up, our house was filled with books on Frank Lloyd Wright and the Art Deco movement, which sparked my interest in architecture from an early age. She supported my creativity throughout my youth, introducing me to a variety of experiences and encouraging me to explore my potential in the design field.     Q: What is your personal philosophy when it comes to architecture and design?  My personal design philosophy is that architecture should be the solution to the needs and problems of its users. It’s about creating environments that enhance quality of life. By taking cultural, environmental, and social factors into account, architectural design can create spaces that are both innovative and in harmony with their surroundings.
