Phase I aims to experimentally validate low-frequency difference and viscous loads on Floating Offshore Wind Turbine (FOWT) platform designs, and to develop tuning practices for Morison coefficients. Minesto continues to push the preparations to completion for commissioning of Dragon 12 in Vestmanna, Faroe Islands. The Dragon 12 is reportedly the world’s first utility-scale tidal dragon, a device that converts energy from tidal-stream flows into electricity using a permanent magnetic direct-drive turbine and hydrodynamics that resemble kites. 🌊 It has been through an installation and recovery cycle. Under extreme weather conditions with heavy snow and wind, the Minesto team has continued on-site work. Now, final preparations are made before installation and production commence. Ground #solar and #wind are driving huge changes in the electric grid to address intermittent availability and low capacity factors. To keep the grid operating with ground #renewables, the way that power is generated, distributed, and managed is changing. These changes are expensive and its showing up in electric bills [1]. Unlike ground renewables, #space based solar (#SBSP) can provide clean inexpensive (yes, cheaper!) firm energy 24 hours a day all year and reduce the need for #storage, #transmission, and demand management. I had the chance to discuss this topic at the TTI/Vanguard "Networks and Communications" conference held in Colorado on Sep 13–15, 2023. The presentation shared a brief history of the US electric grid, the challenges with #decarbonization and renewables, the history of space solar power satellites and Virtus Solis Technologies' efforts to make space based solar power a reality.
