Rooting for all the women in tech! 🤘 As a member of the ITL Estonia Women Leaders' Club, I had the pleasure of attending our latest meeting on October 22, which focused on an important yet often hidden topic – the invisible barriers faced by women (and men) in leadership. Our special guests from TalTech – Tallinn University of Technology, Birgy Lorenz and Sirja Sulakatko, led the discussion on concepts like the glass ceiling, sticky floor, escalator, glass cliff, and golden skirt. These terms highlight the barriers that prevent minorities from reaching their full potential in leadership roles, despite their qualifications and expertise. The discussion delved into how societal norms and biases create these barriers, with real-world examples illustrating their impact. It was an eye-opening session, helping participants gain a deeper understanding of the structural challenges people face. At Proud Engineers, we strongly support initiatives like these. Our mission is to emphasize projects that empower young talent in technology and engineering, helping to shape a society where everyone has equal opportunities, regardless of their background. The topic of this meeting was especially close to our hearts, as Unicorn Squad—an initiative offering technology education to girls aged 8-14—is working to break down these barriers early on. Through hands-on and exciting challenges in technology, robotics, and the sciences, Unicorn Squad aims to ignite a passion for STEM subjects among young girls, encouraging them to see a future for themselves in tech and leadership. We believe that fostering interest in technology at a young age is key to creating a diverse and inclusive future in leadership.

As a result of his convincing, I switched my major to computer science." Making the Invisible more Visible! Women in Tech- the Hidden Gems. Let me explain. I felt this deeply over the weekend in Zürich. I was a Jury member for the Hidden Figure award in Tech. We celebrated extraordinary women in STEM who excel in their fields. Being with more than 100 enthusiastic and amazing women, we shared knowledge and experiences. We discussed how to boost visibility and career opportunities. For me, it’s not just about bringing more women into tech. It's also about ensuring those already in the field are seen and recognised. Why We Need More Women in Tech: → Improved company performance → Addressing talent shortages → Better products and market reach → Economic growth increase by 3-6% Current Challenges: -Only 28% of tech workforce and 14% of leadership roles -50% of women leave tech careers by age 35 -Greater underrepresentation for women of color Solutions: → Address biases, create advancement pathways → Foster inclusive cultures, provide mentorship → Encourage STEM education and up-and re-skilling opportunities Increasing diversity in tech isn't just about fairness—it's a business imperative for better outcomes across the board. As of November 2023, approximately 27.6% of the technology workforce identify as women. Of that, less than 20% hold leadership roles within the technology domain. Only 25% of tech graduates are female with an average drop out rate of 37%. The statistics are sad, dismal, and angering. There is an urgent need to increase the number of women pursuing tech degrees and tech careers. It is imperative that organizations improve support for women in tech and create a clear and distinguished pathway to leadership.  It was such an honor to serve as a moderator for the SheIsTech Conference. I had the awesome privilege of speaking with powerhouse female tech executives Lo Li Carper, Mirna Eusebio Lithgow, and Regina Viadro who all shared their challenges and triumphs of getting to and staying at the executive level in the tech domain. As shared in the discussion "Empowered Women Empower Women". I look forward to continuing to advocate and support more women to start and stay in tech careers and pray that the statistics will dramatically change once it's time for my daughter to enter the workforce.

What a stellar second half of Day 2 at #ATxSummit! The last sessions of the event were truly thought-provoking and uplifting. At The Learning Revolution – Rebooting Future Education panel, experts discussed the potential for leveraging technology to personalise education and account for learners’ unique pace, styles, and abilities. They also highlighted the importance of providing professional development opportunities for teachers, and addressing challenges at individual, institutional, and systemic levels. The next two sessions shone a spotlight on women in tech. The Smashing the Glass Ceiling – Women Who Have Cracked the Code panel saw esteemed leaders share personal stories and insights on how we can encourage women to join, stay, and thrive in the tech industry. Closing the day, the Things I Wish I Knew in My 20s – This Generation of Women Owning the Tech Space panel explored actionable strategies to nurture women talents and future leaders in STEM. The panellists’ anecdotes showcased the value of tenacity in overcoming challenges.
