I always wanted to participate in a 3MT (Three Minute Thesis) competition during my Ph.D., but I wasn't confident in public speaking at the time. Despite my supervisor's strong encouragement, the idea of explaining my research in such a limited time felt daunting. I have always admired those who took on this challenge, as it requires not just deep understanding but also the ability to tell the story of their efforts clearly and briefly. We often find ourselves needing to optimize what we say, and these moments can significantly impact our lives and careers. 3MT is a great opportunities to learn and practice those skills. Recently, I had the opportunity to participate in a similar competition at our Postdoctoral Research Forum at Western University. This time, the challenge was even greater—only 120 seconds to explain my research work. Here is my attempt. Although I didn't win, I believe the skills I developed in preparing and presenting are invaluable. It was an enriching experience that has further honed my ability to communicate complex ideas. #HearingResearch #PublicSpeaking #CommunicationSkills #PersonalGrowth #WesternU

Phd Candidate Neuroscience @Vanderbilt (NSFGRFP, PD Soros Fellow, NISE Fellow, Answers Scholar), BA Psychology/Disability Studies @UC Berkeley (University Medal Finalist, Haas Scholar, Phi Beta Kappa). Autism+ADHD
I recently got the National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship. And today I got to read the feedback on my application and project proposal from the reviewers. I got a rating of “excellent” from all the reviewers, across each of their criteria. Thrilled by the positive comments. The encouraging feedback was beyond my expectations and incredibly affirming. Some excerpts Exceptional young scientist.. Outstanding young scientist… The candidate is exceptional… Perfect recipient for this grant. The candidate is exemplary and clearly well-prepared for a career in research. The work, and the researcher, have the potential to strongly benefit society. The proposed plan is transformative, well-written, and well-reasoned, and will push the multisensory integration field forward. The candidate's proposed work will have a world-changing effect on society as a whole. As society shifts towards increasing awareness of neurodiversity, the proposed plan is incredibly timely. The broader impacts of the proposed research are excellent. #NSFGRFP

What is the aim of a Ph.D program? What are you 'supposed' to do and expected of? To bring reforms in the area you have a concern in? To create a solution in the field you work in? PhD candidates have this enchantement of creating 'massive changes' by research in a particular topic of interest, which is not erroneous to begin with. But one needs to understand that PhD is not a duration to create a solution, but "to learn how to create a solution through research". One has to first learn and try out several methods and techniques in order to arrive at an appropriate methodology. Some even reach here in the second half of their PhD which is absolutely understandable. It is after a PhD, that you are equipped with the mentality and the calibre to explore, question and conduct research in fields that you are interested in. What comes out of a PhD in my opinion is a learning product. So Ph.D program's aim should be at learning, experimenting, discussing, and creating dialogues rather than rote 'creation'. In the race to creation, one loses the single largest duration of their academic life that could have been used for enhancing ones research capabilities. #PhD #research #PhDlife.
