EXHIBITION | NEXUS – A Manifesto for New Architecture. Elizabeth de PORTZAMPARC, Paris Citadelles The design is a renovation of a former “Redoute” military fort to a 4-star hotel, laboratories, student housing, retail, wellness center and convention center in Villejuif. The vertical village project re-establishes a link between the site and its environment without physical barriers. It has a strong aesthetic and offers a wide variety of public spaces that encourage all types of social interaction. The public space is both mineral and vegetal, designed according to a principle of hierarchy of intimacy. This central plot vertical village design is inspired by medieval villages and uses prefabricated timber for its construction system. The result is a vertical village, with a stairway winding between the dwellings, creating a communal living area with terraces, buffer spaces that protect the privacy of the dwellings. Wooden modular housing units feature a regular grid structure. The post and-beam system contains of wooden modules of 3 lengths. They can be installed in any combination to produce a variety of aesthetic designs, resulting in pleasant homes with a diversity of outdoor spaces, including terraces, verandas and loggias. Canopies extend the modules set back from the lower module. EXHIBITION 1 June – 10 July As always, free entrance. In the town of Neusäß, Augsburg District, Schwaben Region, Bavaria, Germany, Architecture firm Titus Bernhard Architekten has completed another compact dwelling in its series of projects known as “habitable sculptures”. Built with a timber frame, the most recent addition to their series is enveloped in sustainable 3D ultra thin sheets of stainless steel. The stainless steel sheets reflect and somewhat mimic the nature surrounding it, creating an ever changing shimmering facade. Strategically placed oversized windows and doors allow for beautiful views of the natural surroundings as well as provide natural sunlight throughout the interior spaces. The home doesn’t stop at ambient light for energy saving measures, the home is also equipped with a 14kW Air Source Heat pump which drastically lowers its energy usage and allows for an air recyclability rate of 83.7%. An important part of sustainability initiatives are that they tackle multiple aspects of it. Sustainability is just one singular concept, it’s a combination of many, which can be achieved in different ways, allowing for creativity. As focus within building design shifts towards the impact of the internal environment on its occupants, increased attention has been paid to the architectural benefits of louvres. Although able to serve a range of purposes, the main aim of an architectural louvre is to allow the movement of air into a building, while prohibiting the entry of obtrusive water and debris.   Architectural louvres are a specified design choice by many architects and developers due to their support of a building’s integrity and aesthetic enhancement. This architectural intervention provides seamless access to the castle's interior and fosters a harmonious connection between the retreat's indoor and outdoor spaces. The external accommodations harmonize with the natural topography, utilizing a radial layout that enables future expansion and adaptation.
