I'm about to go on an extended summer break, but before doing so wanted to post a final video (for this term) from our series of practitioner responses to the work that Harald Walkate and I have been doing with the help of the European Corporate Governance Institute (ECGI) on the question "Does sustainable investing work": https://lnkd.in/eWxmJEs8 This video is with Jim Whittington, Head of Responsible Investment at Dimensional Fund Advisors. Now Dimensional are renowned for their rigorous and data-driven approach to investing and have been publicly skeptical about the role of environmental and social factors as return drivers. So I was expecting Jim largely to agree with our conclusions about the limitations of sustainable investing and where investors should focus. He kinda does, at least in part, but this isn't the full picture of how the interview turned out. Jim draws on the contrast between consequentialist and deontological schools of ethics and comparisons with sports science to make the case that we've underemphasised the importance of values alignment in our work, both as a fundamental principle but also as a contributor to making the world a better place. He also questions whether we really want investors getting involved in trying to influence the political process. A very stimulating discussion! 🚩 At our first strategy session in Frankfurt, experts including Armin von Falkenhayn, Friederike (Fritzi) Koehler-Geib, PhD and Livio Stracca joined to discuss the future of the Capital Markets Union.   🇪🇺 The CMU initiative, launched by the European Commission in 2015, has played a crucial role in improving the integration of European capital markets.
