Identity, Violence, and Nostalgia. Have you notice the uptick in nostalgic, revival, documentary based, and movie sequel offerings over the past 15 years? Marshall McLuhan said in the 70s: “One of the big marks of the loss of identity is nostalgia, revivals of clothing, dances, music and shows,” he said. “We live by the revival, it tells us who we are, or were.” In addition to entertainment culture, notice how individuals seemed to have turned more inward and experiencing a fearful loss of control with their surroundings. From MAGA to various revival events, people seem to long for identity lost in the digital age and for a return to the way things were in simpler "better" times. Also notice the increase of ordinary people lashing out, casually commenting without care or filter, and even the violent Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol or the ouburst of riots triggered by frustration and desire for expedited justice - particularly post-pandemic. McLuhan also made this observation years before the internet: “When you live out on the frontier, you have no identity, you are a nobody, therefore you get very tough, You have to prove you are somebody, and so you become very violent…ordinary people find the need for violence as they lose their identities.” This is the obscure stuff I'll think about while I enjoy the silly humor and pop culture references watching "Unfrosted" from the safety of my home tonight. #mcluhan #communications #culture #postmodern #media #nostalgia #revival #identity https://lnkd.in/gDzMj5h4
