The Giving Culture of Zakat: A Pillar of Hope for Community Building in Nigeria As we step into this blessed Friday, a day of spiritual reflection for Muslims across the world, it is fitting to commend one of the most remarkable practices in Islam: the culture of giving known as zakat. Derived from the Arabic root meaning “to purify” or “to grow,” zakat represents far more than a financial obligation; it is a moral and spiritual duty, a cornerstone of Islam, and a powerful tool for social justice and community building. In Nigeria, a country blessed with diversity yet grappling with significant socio-economic challenges, the implementation of zakat has proven to be a lifeline for many underserved and underprivileged individuals. Through zakat, Nigerian Muslims exemplify selflessness, community spirit, and compassion. It is this generosity that deserves recognition and encouragement. FOCUS ON #Nigeria: #FreedomOfReligionOrBelief #FoRB #LiveWhatYouBelieveNigeria On 15 September, which happened to be the #InternationalDayOfDemocracy, 3 people were killed and 30 others kidnapped following a bandits' attack on churches in Bakinpah-Maro, Kajuru Local Government Area, Kaduna State, Nigeria. Stories like this are all too common in Nigeria, a country positioned 6th on the Open Doors International #WorldWatchList2024 (https://lnkd.in/dBJtqVed) - a ranking of 50 countries in the world where Christians face the most severe persecution because of their religion. To help turn the tide against any kind of religious persecution in Nigeria, no matter which faith group might be involved, Empower Women Media launched a FoRB Media Training Fellowship for qualifying Nigerians to produce short films/documentaries raising awareness about the meaning and significance of FoRB. The final products can be viewed at this link: https://lnkd.in/dk4ZK-P6 https://lnkd.in/dbvj_5Pb. For persons in Jos, Nigeria, it may not be too late to register for the #AfricaReligiousFreedomFilmFestival happening tomorrow.

Understanding Through Dialogue "To talk is to begin to heal." Dialogue is the foundation of any peaceful society. Imagine two neighbors: Hausa and Igbo, living in a Kaduna community with frequent misunderstandings. A simple initiative where they shared their cultures over meals not only dissolved tensions but led to inter-family friendships. Through dialogue, prejudices are challenged, and humanity shines through. Structured efforts like the Kaduna Peace Project bring together youths from Christian and Muslim communities to discuss their fears, grievances, and aspirations. These interactions have reduced violence in flashpoints. Poser: When was the last time you had an open conversation with someone from a different background? Start small and create a ripple effect. In our beloved Nigeria, it often seems like division and conflict have become part of our daily lives. We argue about ethnicity, religion, and countless other issues. We see ourselves as separate, rather than united, often forgetting that our strength lies in our diversity. But this isn't the Nigeria we want for ourselves, or for the generations to come. In America, many start their day with a hopeful prayer: "God Bless America." It's a small gesture, but it embodies a spirit of unity and love for their country. Imagine if, here in Nigeria, we could adopt a similar spirit of positivity and collective hope. What if, instead of tearing each other down, we began to lift each other up? We need to remember that change starts with each one of us. Every word we speak, every action we take, ripples out into our community. By choosing kindness over cruelty, unity over division, and understanding over prejudice, we can start to build a better Nigeria. Consider the impact of a simple smile or a kind word. These small acts can bridge gaps and build connections. Let's make a conscious effort to understand each other's perspectives and celebrate our differences. Our diversity is our greatest strength, not a weakness. For Nigeria to flourish, we must first change ourselves. It begins with treating our neighbors with respect, regardless of their background or beliefs. It means supporting each other through challenges and celebrating our successes together. It means seeing ourselves not just as individuals or members of a particular group, but as Nigerians. Let's strive to create a Nigeria where we all feel valued and supported. Let's teach our children the importance of unity and empathy. Let's be the generation that chooses to break the cycle of division and build a foundation of love and respect. Together, we can create a brighter future for Nigeria! One where we all thrive, where our differences are celebrated, and where we move forward as one nation, under one flag! It starts with you, and it starts with me! Let's choose to be the change we wish to see in Nigeria! #NigeriaUnite #ChangeStartsWithUs #OneNigeria #UnityInDiversity #TogetherWeCan #HopeForNigeria #PositiveChange #NigeriaFirst #LoveAndRespect #BetterNigeria Ayandiran Taiwo Owolabi ✌🏼🇳🇬

We need to stop turning the other cheek 🙄 We need to stop being passive and docile. Let the #Ubuntu, #Agbajowo spirit manifest in us. In collective success is intertwined, Africa will never manifest or be fulfilled using the death economy method. When we forget how to build communal empowerment we forget how to live as Africans. We need a #Mindsetshift Great snippet for Tedd Josiah #Oladelesthoughts #Sundaythoughts.

Why Nigeria also matters to God is because, of all countries on earth, Nigeria showcases how ONENESS/UNITY can be achieved in spite of having the "most diverse" factors to the contrary-: multi-Culturalism, multi-Religion, multi-Visions, multi-Interests, etc. Yet, Nigerians live together. [Note: Nigeria has a prophetic destiny. Just as the Great Pyramid, & Israel, & DNA/genetic code, etc- (they each prove that) GOD EXISTS!!! Ideally, Nigeria should have disintegrated by now; collapsed on itself; blown ourselves up...if not for God keeping us together by himself. Many countries which did not even have this much diversity and confusion sef, had already destroyed themselves by now.] Once we begin to embrace our individual national VALUES/IDENTITY, and celebrate one another's unique contribution to NATIONAL UNITY, then, we will move forward. Each region must once again be allowed to be independent as it was originally/control their economies and resources. We are not breaking up. The earlier you realise that, the better for you, as a Nigerian.[Unless you are more powerful than God sha.]

#Nigeriaindependenceday #Nigerians #Society #Nigeriagovernment #Society As Nigeria approaches another Independence Day, it’s a moment for each of us to reflect not just on our nation, but on our individual roles within it. Every Nigerian, no matter where they are or what they do, holds a sphere of influence - be it in our families, communities, workplaces, or broader society. Now more than ever, we must recognize the impact we can make in shaping the future of our dear country. This begins with self-assessment. Are we using our platforms, whether large or small to promote unity, growth, and progress? Are we contributing positively to the discourse that drives our nation forward? Unity is not the responsibility of Our Leaders|government alone. It starts with each of us. When we foster collaboration and understanding in our circles, we build a stronger foundation for the nation at large. Nigeria’s greatness will only be realized when we all rise to the challenge of leading by example, embracing our diversity, and working together towards shared prosperity. As we celebrate this Independence Day, let’s commit ourselves to uplifting our nation by being beacons of unity and positive change in every space we occupy. Our collective effort is the path to a greater Nigeria.

NEW NIGERIA NEEDS NEW NIGERIANS By Girgi Donald We are all clamouring for a New Nigeria through prayers, dialogue and protest, but we cannot build a sustainable New Nigeria without New Nigerians. We need new thinking and thinkers. The old Nigeria that we earnestly want to get rid of has been built on ethno - religious chauvinism. The evangelists of old Nigeria made sure that they reproduced themselves over the years, so their age is not the issue, it's the age of their mindsets. The Nigeria of our dream can only be built by those can see beyond their nose , beyond their ethnic cocoons and faith affiliations and beyond the hate and corruption tendencies that has been sown and groomed in their minds. Old mindset Nigerians cannot build a New Nigeria🤔. This is a clarion to all New Nigerians to rise up and drown out the voices of Old Nigerians. We must commit to bringing up our own children in a new way, helping them acquire broader global views, with emphasis on celebrating the good in others and putting the overall interest of our dear country above narrow sectional- religious identitie.
