Allies, we want you to take actionable steps to support and empower Black Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) and contribute to a more inclusive and equitable workplace. Here are a few steps:
1. Allocate Resources: Provide Black ERGs with adequate resources, including funding, meeting space, and technology, to help them organise events, initiatives, and programs effectively. Ensure that they have the support they need to thrive.
2. Use Your Privilege and Power: Use your privilege and power to advocate for Black employees and the goals of Black ERGs. Speak up in leadership meetings, allocate budget, and push for policies that promote diversity and inclusion.
3. Partnerships with Black Community Organisations: Forge meaningful partnerships with Black community organisations year-round, not just during Black History Month. Collaborate on initiatives, volunteer opportunities, and events that support the broader community.
4. Compensate Black Speakers and Storytellers: When organising events, especially during Black History Month, hire Black speakers, storytellers, and panelists, and compensate them fairly for their expertise and contributions. Avoid expecting Black individuals to share their experiences for free!
5. Mentorship Programs: Prioritise mentorship and sponsorship programs that specifically support Black talent within your organisation. Pair experienced employees with Black mentees to provide guidance, career advice, and opportunities for growth.
By taking these steps, Allies can actively contribute to a more inclusive workplace and support the professional development and empowerment of Black employees and communities.
