I am 100% ally 🌈 A question we had to reflect on and ask ourselves at the proUd ERG event hosted at the wonderful HQ at Unilever by my friend and my peer Tessa Tamin ❤️and his team. The growing role of an ally in ERGs (employee resource groups) is such an important topic. How do we support and show up for our LGBTQIA plus community. It truly showed the power of connecting, the power of realising what support can look like, how we show up as allies and how can we create spaces to encourage a culture of belonging, psychological safety where people can be ‘100% themselves’ 🌟 Speaking up and using our privileges when it may be needed LGBTQIA plus colleagues and allies from 53 different companies coming together and exchanging stories, learning from each other, being vulnerable with each other, this is where magic happens. One key learning for me I wish to share: 💥If someone identifies at non binary, it does not mean pronouns are ‘they/them’ the person who educated us, preferred to be referred to by ‘name’ for example, Tash is an ally, rather than ‘she’ is an ally Calling all allies 🌟 ‘ I stand behind you, I stand beside you and I stand in front of you. Have you ever been picked on for not fitting the mold of being tall, fit, and fair? Did it leave scars, making you feel desperate to hide or fit in? Did you long for people to appreciate you for who you are, to value you regardless of your appearance, choices, or identity? Now, imagine the daily discrimination faced by people from the LGBTQIA+ community. It's not enough to claim to be liberal by simply saying, "They can do what they want as long as it doesn't involve me." True inclusivity requires more. Reflecting on our own experiences of discrimination should drive us to never target others based on their gender identity or sexual orientation. I began my journey as an active ally six years ago, and each day is an opportunity to learn and grow. Here are three small steps to start your allyship journey: 1. 𝗗𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲: Ask people their preferred names and pronouns. Don't assume everyone has a partner in a traditional structure; instead, ask about their loved ones or family members.     2. 𝗟𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻: Seek to understand their experiences and stories. You'll find common ground and build meaningful connections. Remember, intersectionality matters – be aware of how multiple aspects of a person's identity can affect their experiences.     3. 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝗨𝗽: Avoid making derogatory comments or passing them off as jokes. Stand up against harmful jokes and support those targeted by such remarks. Challenge discriminatory behavior wherever you see it. By taking these small steps, we can make significant progress toward true inclusivity. 𝗣͟𝗿͟𝗶͟𝗱͟𝗲͟ ͟𝗦͟𝘁͟𝗲͟𝗽͟𝘀͟ ͟𝗮͟𝘁͟ ͟𝗦͟𝗮͟𝗳͟𝗲͟𝗦͟𝘁͟𝗼͟𝗿͟𝗶͟𝗲͟𝘀͟ June is one celebratory month for organizations. We love the jazz and this celebratory tone and we want to use this opportunity to introduce ‘𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀’ where we break down the ways you can show up better for the LGBTQIA+ Community, your employees who identify as members of the queer community and people outside of work as well. 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟭 : 𝗔𝗰𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝘅 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮 𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘆.  Understanding concepts as binaries or existing on extremes comes easy to us! It's simple math. Well, in the case of sex you’d say ‘simple biology’. It’s important to acknowledge that one’s gender identity and sexual orientation could be fluid or subject to change, and individuals can find themselves on a spectrum. 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟮: 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 Constantly engaging and opening yourself up to learning more about the LGBTQIA+ community- their life experiences, struggles, thought process, perspectives in order to ‘step in their shoes’. 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟯: 𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝘂𝗻𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 • Recognizing that every ‘male’ doesn’t necessarily have a ‘female’ as their romantic partner and vice versa.  • Stepping away from your assumptions of gender and sexuality and giving space and agency for people to share their pronouns. What do they identify as! What are their preferences? On June 19th, The LGBTQIA+ Centre, New Delhi launched its support group for queer individuals, 'The Listening Circle'. I am grateful for their trust in my work and the opportunity to lead the first session during Pride Month. It was heartwarming to witness many participants finding safety in opening up about their daily challenges as queer individuals. There were shared stories about gender dysphoria, the additional struggles faced by neurodivergent individuals, and the complex intersectionality that further marginalizes some within the community, such as an asexual transman with ASD. Participants discussed the alienation caused by cis-heteronormative power dynamics in educational institutions, workplaces, and family systems. They shared their desires for authentic gender expression and the pain of living in duality, which can be suffocating. The group also explored what celebration means to them, especially during Pride Month, which can be a challenging time for some. This can affect their sense of self and belonging. Together, we redefined celebration, recognizing unique milestones for queer individuals, such as coming out to oneself, expressing gender identity publicly, or something as simple as getting a boyish haircut for the first time. We discussed the recurring feelings of loneliness and depression, understanding these not as personal failings but as outcomes of the socio-political systems we live in.
