It’s a somber day for our nation. I’ve only learned or watched archive news footages of presidential assassinations and/or attempts of the past. But the recent attempt on a presidential candidate is a reminder of our nation’s fragility. We may disagree on policy issues and solutions, but we must recommit to active listening, finding common ground and compromise, and building consensus. Because a functioning democracy isn’t just about voting and representation. It is a bedrock of innovation, ideas, and industrial success. Each of us must do our part because our future depends on it.

Before becoming a trust, British waterways came under Defra. Did you know that British Waterways, once a key organisation in managing the UK's waterways, was part of DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) before its transition in 2012? This pivotal change led to the formation of the Canal & River Trust in England and Wales, a charitable organisation dedicated to the sustainable management of our waterways. In Scotland, British Waterways continues its important work under the name Scottish Canals, remaining a public corporation under the Scottish Government's stewardship. Has thetransition from the public to the third sector ensured that our precious waterways are managed efficiently and sustainably for future generations in light of the recent call for the governments support again #Waterways #Sustainability #BritishWaterways #CanalAndRiverTrust #ScottishCanals #DEFRA #EnvironmentalManagement #waterwaysworld #inlandwaterwaysassociation
🗣📺❗ Our CEO, Richard Parry spoke live on Sky News this morning about the renaissance of #canals and the required partnership with government to keep them alive for nature and the benefit of millions of people 👏 Read our #ElectionStatement here 👇: https://ow.ly/UqVN50SfiQE

DC's transit comeback (bus rides and off-peak/weekend metro rides above 2019 levels) and the success of Capital Bikeshare, which is setting new ridership records almost every month, is a testament to what we've known to be true for a long time, but few leaders have had the willingness to act on: "build it and they will come." Provide reliable headways on public transit? More transit riders will come. Build protected bike lanes? More cyclists will come. And on the flip side, if DOTs or cities expand a road or highway, more drivers will come. We would be well served if local leaders in every major metropolitan area across the U.S. understood this.
“As Randy Clarke, WMATA’s general manager, put it in an interview with NBC4 Washington last year: “We are a public service, right? So whether it’s people five days a week, three days a week, every day of the week, it doesn’t matter. We have to value public transit and fund it accordingly, or have a diminished system, and then we have to be honest: We’re gonna have impacts to our economy; we’re gonna have impacts to equity; impacts to the climate.”
