Beautiful footage of this flood mitigation area here in KC, all those buildings off to the side used to flood when it rained before this new drainage system into this normally low flowing creek was created. It’s definitely doing what the creators had in mind, “Get the extra water out of here, and do it fast.” The problem though is that that isn’t flood mitigation. It’s drought creation. That water only gets the chance to become a flood because it can’t soak in, look at all that impermeable surface around it. We are focusing on sending all our rains away, and then complaining that we are draining the Ogallala aquifer faster than it can replenish it. We need to work with nature not against it cause there’s no situation where we win working against it. If you have even the smallest control over a peice of land, look to using it as a sponge to seep in or store that excess water. https://lnkd.in/dqy-Siq3

Sometimes changes happen so slowly that they are hard to track. Documenting coastal community street flooding with cameras, The Washington Post team found irrefutable evidence of the impacts of rising sea levels. In this case, they observed not only flooding, but flooding at a greater frequency than projected, emphasizing both the variability of tidal statistics and the uncertainty of projections: “In Carolina Beach alone, they have documented 60 days over the past year when Canal Drive flooded, many of those during clear weather. That’s far more than the four to eight high-tide floods projected by the federal government for the same period, based on measurements from a nearby tide gauge.”

A potent tropical airmass, coupled with a slow moving frontal boundary will spell the development for storms and torrential downpours. Timing for the rain begins in VA starting later tonight, spreading into the Delmarva tonight and through NJ/NYC Friday. This all lingers into Saturday before the front finally gets kicked out. In all, a solid 1-2" of rain for many, but as much as 3"+ for some areas circled in black. Stay aware of your surroundings and avoid flooded roadways.
