How 'energy islands' are shaping Israel's wartime energy security. Israel's energy transition plan has been in the works for years but took on greater urgency when war broke out on several fronts following deadly Hamas attacks in southern Israel on October 7.

Ukraine's energy system has been targeted since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of the country in February 2022. These attacks on key infrastructure have recently increased and intensified, posing a huge threat to reliable access to power, heating and communications services across Ukraine this winter. Today, more than two thirds of Ukraine's thermal generation are either damaged or occupied. A period of extreme cold over the coming winter would take a massive toll on the overall population and put enormous pressure on the already overstretched health system. If the winter is accompanied by inadequate provision of heat or electricity, this could lead to a renewed wave of refugees moving to other parts of Ukraine and abroad, as some places in the country become simply unliveable. Our Executive Director Fatih Birol and President of the EC Von der Leyen are currently presenting a new IEA analysis focusing on 10 key actions for reniforcing the energy security of Ukraine before the winter, as well as examining the energy situation in Moldova. With Ukrainian energy infrastructure under huge strain, this IEA report outlines immediate steps for country and its partners to tackle vulnerabilities as temperatures drop. Congrats to authors Tim Gould Craig Hart, Dennis Hesseling, Akos Losz, Greg Molnár, Talya Vatman and Jacques Warichet, and many other colleagues that brougth this important analysis to the highest level. The analysis can be found here:

Energy is essential for the survival of human beings, and energy security is what every nation strives towards, especially in view of the energy crisis stemming from the Russia-Ukraine conflict at the beginning of 2022. As a result, several nations, including countries in Europe, faced severe hardships. It made me wonder what China knew about projecting the future energy crisis when they started the Three Gorges project in 1994. Pumped storage hydropower represents one of the most efficient uses of natural gravity for load balancing and power generation in times of need. This does not translate well for regions sharing river systems, and much greater regional cooperation and understanding will have to be sought to expand this natural storage capacity. The way forward to the sustainability pivot will always be about our ability to put coordinated collaboration into practice. All technologies, regardless of how advanced, are enablers. #hydropower #climatechange #sustainableenergy #pumpedstoragehydropower #coordinatedcollaboration #sustainabilitypivot #energytransition

One of the benefits of the clean energy transition that is often overlooked is that a grid with a lot of renewables is more decentralized. Accordingly, it's harder to knock out whether by natural disasters or attacks. #renewableenergy https://lnkd.in/g67V6qKe

The UK is now doing what the world has to do to stop global warming. It has made the mistake of trying to rely on nuclear power, a very costly path that is filled with hurdles and perils, and is still relying on expensive fossile gas and even coal. It is great to watch how the UK is taking on this challenge! "Miliband, who has promised to triple the amount of solar power in the UK by 2030, as well as double onshore wind and quadruple offshore wind, said on Saturday night: “I want to unleash a UK solar rooftop revolution. We will encourage builders and homeowners in whatever way we can to deliver this win-win technology to millions of addresses in the UK so people can provide their own electricity, cut their bills and at the same time help fight climate change.” Miliband’s rapid moves on solar power were welcomed by UK energy experts, who said they would speedily rectify a huge imbalance in the use of renewable energy in Britain. At present, most power from renewable sources is concentrated in the north but has to be transmitted to the south, where demand is most intense. “Unfortunately, these transmission lines are congested and power supplies from the north to the south are often curtailed,” said Sugandha Srivastav, of Oxford University’s Smith School of Enterprise and Environment."

The Eight Stages of Grieving for Australian Conservation Foundation, Climate Council, World Wildlife Fund, Australian Labor Party, The Australian Greens: 1) Support construction of lots of wind and solar factories. 2) Shocked by the scale of environmental destruction caused by the wind and solar factories and transmission lines https://lnkd.in/gEwn6UW5. 3) Tell yourself that the environmental destruction is ok because "we need to save the planet". 4) Shocked that Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) plans to build a parallel fossil fuel generation system to power the grid when the sun doesn't shine. 5) Support lots of battery proposals so we don't need as much fossil fuel backup generation. 6) Shocked that the grid scale batteries needed are prohibitively expensive, and like wind and solar factories need to be replaced every 10 to 25 years. 7) Support construction of nuclear power plants. 8) Regret not supporting nuclear sooner.

How is the current risk to peace affecting the energy transition? Risk to peace was top of the World Energy Council respondents’ minds as market uncertainty and volatility is exacerbated by the on-going war in Ukraine and instability in the Middle East. Across the world, 33% of respondents said global conflicts were a high or very high uncertainty, increasing to 41% for Europe. https://lnkd.in/eqY4GGMe #energy #utilities #energytransition #energysecurity
