ETHICAL STORYTELLING: How are you compensating folks with lived experience who are contributing to your organization's work? ▶ We raise our hands to Region of Peel, guided by Timea Eva Nagy Payne M.S.M. She/Her and Samantha MacNeill in developing a framework to compensate those with lived experiences of human trafficking who contribute to their work in Peel Region. ▶ Lived experience can be defined as a term belonging to people with firsthand knowledge and experiences of an event or identity, rather than assumptions and constructs from other people, research, media, or being in close proximity to someone with lived experience (Meaningful Engagement with People of Lived Experience Toolkit, 2023) ▶ Research has repeatedly highlighted the success of initiatives that engage people who are or have been impacted by an issue in developing, implementing, and evaluating the effectiveness of strategies to address the issue. ▶ Examples of engaging lived experience/living expertise could look like: A DEIA council made up of staff and community members, national advocacy groups you collaborate with to develop a corporate responsibility project, advisors for a marketing and awareness campaign on a social issue, and much more. As noted by Samantha MacNeill, remunerating people for their time and expertise is not new. In fact, we at the Maxwell Consulting Group challenge that it's labour exploitation not to compensate, and this kind of labour is both physical and emotional, and requires a different compensation scale that we build with organizations. I created a prompt for a video featuring a black man driving a car. After the original prompt was flagged, the word "black" was removed, the end result still featured a man. This incident highlights potential biases that can arise from algorithms. Notwithstanding, AI generated video is getting better. I have posted a link, try creating a few videos. #Algorithms #Bias #Diversity #Inclusion #SocialJustice #Advocacy

We are interested in collective harms caused by #AI and #algorithms processing non-personal data. We wanted to shed light on the need for collective data rights and commissioned AWO Agency to conduct a legal analysis of the UK's currently available remedies on three hypothetical scenarios. 🚓 a police force using historic crime data to determine patrol allocations in ways that increase Stop and Search use in over-policed neighbourhoods 🚂 a train operating company using algorithms based on historic data to determine surge prices in ways that disadvantage consumers 💻 a social media company removing legitimate content in ways that undermine the free expression rights of those interested in LGBTQ+ or non-English content.
AWO Report: Does the law allow non data subjects to challenge algorithmic harms?

2mothought provoking article MaryAnn. I can certainly see both sides. It calls to mind when I try to say "remember to do something" instead of "don't forget".....there is a difference in how it comes across. Sometimes I take a George Carlin attitude to political correctness....such as referring to someone as a "blind person". No...it is now "visually impaired". which is very vague....do they have macular degeneration, are they cross eyed, can they not see at all....certain words mean certain things and I don't understand why and when they became bad to use....
