When a trend to hate supercedes optimistic opportunity for others human evolution stops. We are at a cross roads in determining the fate of humanity. Labor Day is a time to recognize the contributions of all workers and the strides that have been made to protect people’s rights in the workplace. But it is also a time to acknowledge that there is still much work to be done. According to an August 2024 report by the Williams Institute of the UCLA School of Law, “employment discrimination against LGBTQ people continues to be persistent and widespread. We are just over a month from Pride Month - that month where LinkedIn becomes awash with rainbows 🌈 and an outpouring of Queer Love 🥰 - a time of celebration, and importantly a time to protest and create awareness of the discrimination and backlash the LGBTQIA+ communities still face. We are living in a divided country in the UK, and this is replicated around the world. This past 2 years have seen a marked uptick in hate crimes, and laws enacted to directly target LGBTQIA+🏳️🌈 rights, and these continue to increase. The rise of coordinated attacks on Transgender and Nonbinary individuals 🏳️⚧️ is on the rise - it has become a societal norm to "debate transgender people's existence" and demonise the right for people to be able to get on with their lives in peace. After I got done rolling my eyes (🙄), I implored them to consider the following: 💡 Has it ever been illegal to be straight? No. 💡 Has someone ever hidden the fact that they were straight to avoid physical violence? No. 💡 Do people live in fear of losing their jobs and financial security if others find out they are straight? Again, no. In the face of adversity, LGBTQIA+ communities continue to thrive. *That* is why Pride Month is not only celebratory but necessary. Recently, someone asked a thought-provoking question: "I want to be an LGBTQ ally, but I'm worried that people will think I'm part of the community. How can I be an ally?" My response? If you genuinely stand as an ally, labels shouldn't hold you back. If the idea of being labeled makes you uneasy, it's essential to introspect why. Do you perceive the label as negative or inferior? If not, it shouldn't faze you. Authentic allyship means unwavering support, without fear or conditions. It's about fostering environments of acceptance and respect, advocating for equality and understanding, irrespective of how you're perceived. If the label comes your way, embrace it. It signifies solidarity and empathy, a commitment to making our world better for everyone, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. Allyship demands standing up for what's right, even if it means confronting misunderstandings or prejudice. Here’s an extract: So often, I read guides to trans inclusion which say things like: “we must include our trans colleagues” “reach out to trans people (if you know any)” “how can workplaces recruit trans people?” It’s bizarre, because… not everyone is cis. So it’s probably more accurate to say: “equity for trans people is everyone’s responsibility” “reach out to trans people you know” “how can workplaces recruit, retain and support trans people?”
