Once upon a time I applied for a job meant to send sales reps to Dubai. The irony of this action on my end was that I was ill prepared. Furthermore, I barely understood myself at that time and my personal brand label/statement then was 'WORKER' 😂. As I entered the interview room, for starters I didn't even have the basic requirement aka passport and hilariously enough though I knew the industry they were recruiting for I ended up delivering very irrelevant answers to all questions asked 😂. I think I was a joker. What were the questions? 1. Name 10 international fashion designers. The saddest thing is I couldn't even recall the brand name labels on my mtumba clothes.I mean it was second hand but it was still Calvin Klein 😂. 2. Sell to us this pen Like CJ Martha Koome would say, I delivered 'hot air' 😂. I fumbled like a fool and not because I couldn't say anything constructive but because my mind had questions. My mind always plays games when it has questions. These questions ranged from are they looking for workers or pen selling experts (remember my personal brand statement is 'worker'); who needs to be convinced to buy a pen?; what does fashion have to do with pens; furthermore, if you need a pen will you not just buy? abeg, why do humans need so much stroking of ego to be convinced to buy what they need? 😂. My mind can get very wild when it's tired and has questions 😂 Many years later I quietly admire the lessons I drew from my foolishness and humourously relive the nonsense that was my appearance that day. Of course Dubai was never a success. I also discovered I am in baby class when it comes to the fashion industry, and finally I began lesson 101 on why selling is an art and science, the power of negotiation and the art of convincing humanity, among many other lessons I am learning to date. What am I getting to? Every single day we package ourselves for sale out there and this is through our daily interactions. The thing is that with each action you take your personal brand takes up a certain form or shape. If this is a truth you can agree with, then why are you not careful to craft and consistently check the performance and direction of your personal brand? Why are you not intentional in this journey of personal branding? I think it's time to not just pick a personality 😂 but also be intentional on making it a personal brand so that the rest of the personalities align with the superior one you select 😂. I know the beauty of mysteries but in Career growth and advancement, no one has time to try figuring out who you are. Therefore become intentional in your personal branding journey so that it's clear from the onset.
