Gen Z - Shaping the Next Generation of Talent   As the summer wraps up, I’ve taken some time to reflect on the invaluable experience spending the last months with my Gen Z interns. While internships are traditionally seen as a learning experience for students, I’ve very much enjoyed that it’s a two-way street: fresh perspectives and guidance through the critical stage of their professional journeys. Remembering what great managers I had as intern and working student across different countries and cultures. How to develop Gen Zs to take ownership of their growth and helping them cultivate the passion that drives exceptional work?   🤚Instilling a Sense of Ownership One of my priorities was teaching the value of ownership. I encouraged our interns to take full accountability for their projects, empowering them to make decisions and learn from both their successes and setbacks. Watching them step into that responsibility reaffirmed the importance of fostering autonomy in young professionals. 🔥Passion Fuels Excellence People thrive when their work aligns with what they care about. I emphasized the importance of finding purpose in what they do. By sharing my own experiences, I aimed to inspire them to see beyond tasks and focus on the bigger picture. 🧠Guiding Innovation with Accountability Gen Z is inherently adaptable and creative, but I sought to channel that potential into innovation grounded in accountability. Encouraging them to think boldly, while ensuring they owned the outcomes of their work, helped them develop a balance of creativity and responsibility - essential traits for future leaders. 🌱Nurturing Long-Term Professionalism For me it isn't just about guiding today — it’s about shaping the professionals of tomorrow. Extremely fortunate to say that after an amazing summer internship, I've received a full-time offer from Lumen Technologies! Getting an offer, one semester before graduating, especially when the market's this bad - phew! Here's what mattered: 1. Luck: A lot of folks (from various organizations) ended their summer internships without a return offer simply because companies do not have the "headcount" yet ... meaning they cannot roll out offers months/year in advance before they have finalized their business needs. Conversions don't happen purely based on skill. Conversions happen based on requirements, which is not in our (employee's) control. 2. Performance and Fit: This is the only thing in our control. Most of the time it just boils down to being a decent team player. Intent > Talent : someone who's committed and who shows intent to grow will always be valuable to the team. So it's okay if you don't know how to containerize an application on Day 1. This is an internship. Hot take: Point 1 often matters more than Point 2. Which is why I used the word "fortunate".
