And, some areas of application: From AI-assisted search: The Iridium satellite system uses L band transponders to communicate with the ground based users with frequencies in the band 1616 – 1626.5 MHz while the backhaul to the terrestrial gateways is in the band between 29.1 and 29.3 GHz for the up-link and in the band between 19.1 and 19.6 GHz for the downlink. From Wikipedia: In satellite communications, the Ka band allows higher bandwidth communication.[6] It was first used in the experimental ACTS Gigabit Satellite Network, and is currently used for high-throughput satellite Internet access in geostationary orbit (GEO) by the Inmarsat I-5 system and Kacific K-1 satellite;[8] in low Earth orbit (LEO) by the SpaceX Starlink system[9] and the Iridium Next satellite series;[10] it is also used in medium Earth orbit (MEO) by the SES O3b system;and the James Webb Space Telescope. Planned future satellite projects using the Ka-band include Amazon's Project Kuiper satellite internet constellation in LEO,[13] SES's multi-orbit satellite internet system of the SES-17 satellite in GEO (launched in October 2021; in position and fully operational in June 2022)[14] and the O3b mPOWER constellation in MEO (first two satellites launched December 2022, nine more 2023-2024, and starting service in Q3 2023). The Ka band is more susceptible to rain attenuation than is the Ku band, which in turn is more susceptible than the C band.[18] The frequency is commonly used by cosmic microwave background experiments. 5th generation mobile networks will also partially overlap with the Ka band (28, 38, and 60 GHz).

#megaconstellations are enabling previously unimaginable worldwide connectivity. Last Friday at #WSW2024 in Espoo, I had the privilege of presenting QoS measurements conducted by Airbus / Secure Land Communications, Airbus Secure Communications, VTT, and Goodmill Systems Ltd. during a SATCOM session chaired by VTT's Marko Höyhtyä. The presentation covered results and key insights from a paper we’ve submitted to the IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems Magazine. Our research focused on black-box QoS measurements of the Eutelsat OneWeb system, specifically looking at a fixed user terminal located in Northern Finland. The research was funded by Business Finland, the Finnish government organisation for innovation funding. The measured KPIs showcased the ability of OneWeb to support near real-time communication thanks to low latency and jitter, as well as high availability of 98 %, a promising figure considering that the constellation was still awaiting the final satellite launches at the time of the tests.
