Joonga Land and Water Aboriginal Corporation are collecting #Shark data with the SMART (Shark Management Alert in Real Time) drumline contract on the NSW south coast from #BatemansBay to #Broulee. 🦈🙌🏾 Joonga staff take the boat out daily and set lines with bait (usually mullet) at first light, about 500m from shore. When the bait is taken, a satellite alert is triggered and sends a message to the crew, who have 30 minutes to reach the drum and get to work. 📡 Targeted species, white, bull or tiger sharks are tagged and released further out at sea, and all other animals are released. If a tagged shark swims within 500m of a drum, information is sent via satellite to the SharkSmart app and the X (Twitter) account so beach-goers and surfers can access real-time updates. 📲 Data from the full network of stations also provides insights into the movements of sharks. *The #Joonga crew have all had specialist training to work safely with sharks. Congratulations to Wally Stewart and everyone at Joonga Aboriginal Corporation for winning the new long term tender for the SMARTDrumlines contract from #BatemansBay to #Moruya. This was a wild shoot - and slightly terrifying when an actual White Pointer set off the alert. The 'money shot' is the #sharks floating docilely in the water one moment while being tagged, then a split second later erupting in a violent spasm and taking off. Sorry the camera whip-pans away but my first thought was not to get saltwater on it followed by my second thought about not getting those enormous jaws anywhere near me. Heart rate, 200. It was one of many awesome projects over many years of work up and down the coast with DPI's Marine Estate Management Strategy (MEMS). Good mate and Yuin Elder, Wally Stewart, has been a key figure in diverse Indigenous #southcoast initiatives and his leadership in the community along with wife Yvonne Stewart, Rob Chewying, Danny Chapman (Chair of NSW Aboriginal Land Council) and many others has led to the foundation of #Joonga Aboriginal Corporation where people from local communities like Lachy and Kayden in the video can have stable, culturally-relevant employment. Lachy and Kayden have also been participants in the #mems coxswains course and their work on drumlines has allowed them to complete their necessary hours at sea captaining small to mid-sized commercial vessels. And they also have specialist training in how to handle sharks safely. There's no overstating the importance of these projects with their provision of skills around Sea Country, training community members as deckhands, coxswains, tourism officer, and in business development, low-impact fishing, boat-building, boat-chartering, scientific-diving and industrial recycling. As far as video production goes, it's all pretty reflexive work. That is, just trying to keep up with the action, keep the various cameras rolling (main camera Sony FX6, stills camera A7SIII, drone, Gopro ... OMG endless battery-charging, maintenance, offloading and backing-up media), to keep the shark in frame, keep on your feet with one hand ALWAYS on the boat, and get enough stable footage to tell the story. BTW if you're a business supplier on the South Coast, give some thought to talking to Joonga about business opportunities.
