“The Shawshank Redemption” released 30 years ago on 23rd September 1994. And it bombed upon its release. Made on a budget of $25 Million, it could only recover $16 Million from the cinema theatres. It didn’t win any Oscar either. It was released in the same summer as Forrest Gump & Pulp Fiction, both of which garnered public & media attention and became part of pop-culture. Fast forward 30 years later, it’s considered a cinematic masterpiece. It remains number 1 on IMDB. There’s a lot we can learn from the wild ride of The Shawshank Redemption. You might consider your work as a failure today. The product/service you were working on might have failed to scale. All the years of effort seem like doomed. But if you keep going, time will rub it’s magic on it. Either bring it up to the forefront when masses begin to appreciate it. Or leave you with insights & wisdom the world will pay anything for. The Screen Addict Recommends – True Lies (1994) and The Abyss (1989) in glorious ultra-high definition (finally!) I’ve talked a lot on this platform about the frustrating fact that for the longest time, many of my favorite James Cameron flicks were not available in 4k – or even on Blu-ray, for that matter. Especially True Lies and The Abyss are glaring omissions in my high-def library. I obviously own several DVDs and VHS tapes of both pictures, and used to revisit ‘em at least once a year, but I have been putting that off for the past decade or so in anticipation of the UHD releases. Well, the long wait is finally over. Yesterday, I got to experience back-to-back, crystal-clear viewings of TL – Cameron and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s take on James Bond – and the criminally undervalued SciFi-masterpiece The Abyss. (read my love letter to Cameron's underwater epic here https://lnkd.in/gPHPhVVQ) One of the main reasons why TL and The Abyss are closer to my heart than any other Cameron production, is that these two pictures also work as an acting showcase for the amazing Michael Biehn and Bill Paxton. Both actors more or less became Cameron regulars after having worked with the director on The Terminator (1984) and Aliens (1986), but in TL and The Abyss they truly get to shine. In particular Biehn’s performance as the paranoid Navy SEAL in The Abyss is exceptional. Actually acquiring 4k discs of TL and The Abyss wasn’t easy, by the way. Retailers in my country apparently believe that not even evergreens like these are going to make money on physical media, so I had to import my copies from France… Thank you Amazon. It was totally worth the hassle though – revisiting the enhanced classics after all this time, damn near brought tears to my eyes. Were my eyes watering because of the piercingly bright images? Sure. "Waiting for Godot", by Samuel Beckett This work is considered one of the most important (and thus creative) plays of the 20th century, a pivotal moment in modern drama. It earned Beckett a Nobel Prize. We consider it today because the English version of the play premiered on August 3, 1955. With the help of the BBC Culture website, we consider "why has Waiting for Godot proved so durable? How has Beckett's work outlasted the other iconoclasts and angry young writers of the 1950s and 1960s? "'I would suggest the answer lies in its ambiguities. So much is suggested rather than explicitly stated,' says [one scholar]. "'People can read into it what they want to read into it.' "This openness to interpretation has helped the play to avoid becoming dated, he says. For a play that's about the passing of time, it's curiously timeless. "It asks all the big philosophical questions - about life and death and the uncertain purpose of what goes on in between - but in a way that isn't limited to a particular place or era. ... "The underlying humour is also part of the continuing appeal of Waiting for Godot ... It's often a peculiarly bleak comedy of resistance, but the thread of humour is always there to leaven the gloom. ... "A key reason for this growing resonance with audiences ... is the visual appeal. Beckett's strong images appeal to a design-conscious, visually-literate culture. ... "... there is a direct link between the plays and Beckett's interest in painting. "'He was passionately involved in painting, not just that he loved to be with painters, but he was a real expert on 17th Century Dutch painting.' ""He knew these pictures so well, he was so engrossed in these scenes. It seems to me that these pictures are really echoed in Waiting for Godot." You can judge for yourself. 🏆 Two things from two very different directors stuck out for me from this years Oscars' highlights (because, let's be real how many people who were not physically there actually watched the whole thing?) #Jonathan Glazer's powerful defence of Gazan lives and his rebuttal of the exploitation of historical wrongs to justify present wrongs. But also #Cord Jefferson's invitation for the industry to take risks. "But $200 million movies are also a risk. And it doesn’t always work out, but you the risk anyway. Instead of making one $200 million movie, try making 20 $10 million movies. Or 50 $4 million movies." They both made me think about the powerful role that media and mediamakers can still play in our society as well as the value of independence. The ability to express and create without impediments. They made me think about the grown suite of tools that are being developed that are allowing creators to do more and more independently 🤔 https://lnkd.in/e9GbZR7a
