Accessibility isn’t one-size-fits-all. In this insightful blog, Ferris Knight, a disabled writer, explores the complexities of disability, the challenges of competing access needs, and the limitations of traditional accessibility measures. From hidden symptoms to conflicting requirements (like bright lights vs migraines, or ramps vs fatigue), Ferris highlights why true accessibility requires more than ramps and wheelchair icons. It’s about listening, learning, and designing spaces that cater to diverse needs. “Disabled people have done their part, screaming into the void about access requirements. It’s now time to listen.” Read the full blog below. #Invacare #YesYouCan #MakingLifesexperiencesPossible #PwD

Executive committee of UEMS-PRM Section and Board 🌟 Today, December 3rd, marks the International Day of Persons with Disabilities - a crucial moment to reshape our understanding of disability and inclusion in our global society. Disability is far more complex than what meets the eye. It's not merely about physical limitations or mobility challenges; it's a multifaceted reality that touches every aspect of human experience. As healthcare professionals, we witness daily how disability intersects with the physical, emotional, and social dimensions of life. Our rehabilitation work spans a broad spectrum, from neurological conditions requiring intensive care to the more prevalent musculoskeletal disorders like chronic back pain, cervical issues, and arthritic conditions. While often temporary, these conditions can sometimes evolve into chronic situations that fundamentally alter daily life. According to the World Health Organization, musculoskeletal conditions affect nearly 1.71 billion people globally, making them the leading contributor to disability worldwide. However, rehabilitation is just one piece of a larger puzzle. The true challenge begins after the acute phase of illness or injury when individuals must reintegrate into their social environment. This is where we must shift our focus from mere medical intervention to ensuring fundamental human rights - the right to pursue meaningful life goals, to chase dreams, and to maintain aspirations despite physical challenges. We're gradually learning that disability exists on a spectrum where we all find ourselves at different points throughout our lives. Whether temporary or permanent, visible or invisible, each of us experiences varying degrees of ability and disability. This understanding should drive us toward creating genuinely inclusive environments in our workplaces, communities, and society. True inclusion means designing spaces, systems, and societies accommodating everyone's needs. It means recognising that diversity in ability is not a barrier to be overcome but a reality to be embraced and incorporated into our planning and thinking. The path forward requires collective action, from healthcare providers improving rehabilitation techniques, employers creating inclusive workplaces, and policymakers ensuring equal rights and opportunities. Each of us has a role in building a world where disability is not a differentiator but another aspect of human diversity. #InternationalDayOfPersonsWithDisabilities #Inclusion #Healthcare #Rehabilitation #Accessibility #DiversityAndInclusion #SocialImpact #HumanRights

Day 6/14: Living and Working with a Disability in Biopharma As part of a 2-week series on working in biopharma with a disability, I want to highlight how simple accommodations can maximize employee performance and improve quality of life. I'm hoping to increase awareness and help folks get off the "ladder of assumptions" about why someone with a disability may or may not do something, or may not do it the way you expect them to. Today, let's discuss the impact of overly complicated accommodation processes. Requesting accommodations should be straightforward, but often it's not. I once found myself in a situation where I needed a specific computer monitor to effectively perform my job. What should have been a simple request turned into an exhausting ordeal, requiring me to disclose my disability to individuals in five different departments. This excessive process not only delayed getting the necessary equipment but also compromised my privacy and added unnecessary stress. In reality, a single person with the right authority could have approved this simple, reasonable request. Streamlining accommodation processes is crucial. It respects the employee's privacy, reduces stress, and ensures timely implementation of necessary accommodations. A more efficient system not only benefits employees with disabilities but also saves time and resources for the company. Remember, the goal of accommodations is to enable employees to perform their best work. The process to obtain them shouldn't be a barrier in itself. Stay tuned for more insights on navigating my invisible disability in this space. #DisabilityAwareness #BiopharmaInclusion #POTS *This post represents my opinion and not the opinions or positions of any particular group, company or entity.

Day 1 at the National Disability Services Executive Leaders Conference! Today, I had the privilege of attending this confernce to hear the findings from the latest NDS State of the Sector Report 📊. The data paints a challenging picture: Only 30% of providers made a profit in FY24 💸 Just 27% expect profitability in FY25 🧮 Over 20% of providers are considering exiting the sector due to financial sustainability concerns ⚠️ These figures underscore the immense challenges in the disability services sector, particularly with uncertainty around future pricing models and the reform journey ahead. But it’s not all grim! 🌟 Nearly 100% of providers see opportunities to improve procedures ✅ Close to 90% are planning to grow their client base 🚀 Hearing from Michael Perusco, the new CEO of NDS, and Louise Glanville, the new Commissioner of the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, was reassuring. Their commitment to stabilising the sector offers hope for providers continuing to achieving quality care outcomes for participants 🙌. It’s clear there’s a long road ahead, but hearing from those who disability services has made the world of difference today reminds me why this work matters 💙. Looking forward to Day 2 tomorrow

People with disabilities are often at increased risk of injury. Yet, when safety education and resources are provided, they might not be relevant, understandable, or accessible to those with disabilities. To resolve this problem, Children's Specialized Hospital has created a one stop hub of safety resources in multiple formats to increase accessibility, understanding, and use.
