The Urban Leaders Fellowship has kicked off its 2024 summer fellowship in seven regions this summer led by more than 14 incredible Regional and Policy Directors! #WeveStarted This summer marks an especially important juncture of our 14th year - the relaunching of both the Oakland and Indianapolis regions alongside launching ULF's first ever Inaugural Mentor Program. #Year14 ULF Oakland is led by Georgia Savage with Appointed/Elected Official Meredith Curry Nuñez. Oakland has a long-standing history of impactful local policy and impact with more than 50+ alumni going on to led policy and advocacy spaces, serve as Chief of Staff, and Executive Director of local and state organizations. Notable alumni include Kyra Mungia, Forbes 30 Under 30, and Townes Bouchard-Dean of Oakland Thrive. We are excited for Oakland to dig deep in higher education policy - an unchartered arena for ULF. #TeamOakland ULF Indy is led by Danielle Drake, a committed community advocate with Appointed/Elected Official, Karrah Herring, CEIO. Since 2016, ULF Indy has been a critical career intersection for not only K-12 educators, but start-up founders, and civic leaders across the country. Indy alumni include Life Purpose Coach, Angela Choi; Haley Wing, MPA, and Andrew Pillow, who serves our country as an Air Force servicemen. #TeamIndy For the past few weeks, Oakland and Indy fellows have explored the intersection of identity, privilege, power, and class along with leadership style, policy levers, and most importantly self-actualization of the individual and collective change they wish to see in their cities, states, and country. ULF acknowledges that in order to continue to strong experiences aimed at creating more equitable communities, this also means developing our fellows at the highest level. 🌟 Celebrating Real-Life Superheroes this Mother's Day 🌟 This upcoming Mother's Day, we're proud to shine a spotlight on the incredible work of our McGowan Fellows, who are not just leaders but real-life superheroes creating positive change. Meet Sahar Jamal, a McGowan Alumna whose journey embodies the spirit of ethical leadership. As an advocate for working mothers, Sahar understood the challenges many face upon returning to work after childbirth. She recognized the need for solutions that support mothers in balancing their professional and personal lives effectively. In response, she spearheaded the development of a small, discreet, battery-operated breast pump that refrigerates milk, addressing critical challenges faced by mothers in Kenya and beyond. Sahar's story is a testament to the impact of ethical leadership nurtured through our Fellowship Program. At the heart of this program are six guiding principles: Accountability, Character & Integrity, Courage, Empathy, Resilience, and Self-Awareness. These principles empower our Fellows to make integrity-based business decisions that create meaningful social impact. Through our program, Sahar discovered a community of like-minded leaders. Together, they are shaping a future where leadership is defined by principles and actions that benefit society at large. Three new leadership appointees will advance NMU's core values and strategic priorities related to inclusion and belonging, sustainability and academic excellence. Shawnrece Campbell, previously at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, is assistant vice president for Diversity and Inclusion. NMU professor and alumna Jessica Thompson is assistant vice president for Sustainability. Anne Dahlman, most recently at Minnesota State University Mankato, will begin as provost and vice president for Academic Affairs on April 1. Davidson Leadership Class: REDI 2023 What has been the impact of REDI on your leadership journey since completing the training, personally and professionally? Encouragement and given me the security to work toward community collaborations and work to bring organizations together on projects to avoid duplication of programs and events. I filed to run for NC Senate District 30 and will be a candidate for the November 2024 elections. What recent accomplishments, projects, initiatives, or points of pride would you like to share? Our organization hosted the first Black History Month Art Invitational, a new artists exhibition. We had eight new artists showcase their art and speak with community attendees. Some of our artists had buyers purchase their first one-of-a-kind artwork. This was a wonderful event, and I am so proud of the outcome. What are the greatest assets in your rural community or region? Our value system assuring that citizens feel like they belong, supporting one another and working toward a better community. I believe those assets will help keep our community striving and thriving and working together to bring more folks together. What are the most significant economic development challenges facing your rural community or region today? Lack of affordable housing open to accepting subsidized housing vouchers and a lack of rental homes for Section 8 recipients. Our community needs more entrepreneurship/small business growth and programs. We need these programs to be visible and easy for interested people to find and learn more about. I also feel we are in need for more local economic development. What advice would you offer to current or emerging leaders in rural areas? Work to bring more collaboration in your rural and smaller communities. Try to pull organizations together to work smarter not harder to provide various opportunities for the community.

Today, we are thrilled to announce the winners of the Profiles in Collective Leadership initiative. 🎉 At a time of intense polarization and widespread anxiety about what the future holds for America's young people, Profiles in Collective Leadership supports local leaders who are forging ambitious partnerships in their communities, helping students pursue meaningful education, fulfilling work, and engagement in civic life. Through the Profiles initiative, Carnegie Corporation of New York is awarding $200,000 grants to 10 communities where leaders from different fields – such as medicine, business, technology, and public schooling – are joining forces to help low-income students thrive and participate in their communities. The 10 recognized partnerships in 8 states will act as exemplars, sharing what they have learned with each other and more broadly. The Corporation, in partnership with the education nonprofit Transcend, identified candidates through a competitive national process. The winners were selected by a panel of jurors comprised of a broad range of leaders in business, higher education, and philanthropy, including Corporation board member Kurt L. Schmoke, president of the University of Baltimore and the former mayor of Baltimore. The projects span California’s Coachella Valley, where teams are building a talent pipeline to health care jobs, to Tennessee, where a major insurer works with a state university to offer students a 27-month bachelor’s degree in computer science and a position at the company. Nonpartisan collaborations in Alabama, Indiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Mexico, and Texas serve students from a mix of rural, suburban, and urban areas. Tracy Filosa, Managing Director and Head of CA Institute, shared insights and best practices for public university endowments at the AGB Foundation Leadership Forum in Los Angeles. She also noted how the most forward-thinking institutions use their #endowments for more than simply balancing budgets.
