As announced on Saturday by Hon Reece Whitby, Minister for Environment, many plastic takeaway food containers and non-compostable produce bags for fresh fruit and veg are phased out in #WesternAustralia, as the State Government's nation-leading #PlanForPlastics pushes ahead. Since the plan commenced in 2021, WA has removed hundreds of millions of #SingleUsePlastic items from circulation, with up to 1.1 billion items to be saved from #landfill every year once the plan is fully implemented. It's expected a ban on single-use plastic takeaway food container lids and loose produce bags will save up to an additional 226 million #SingleUsePlastics from landfill and litter every year.  Minister Whitby was joined at the launch by Hon Simone McGurk, Minister for Water. The type of news that makes me very happy. Solutions exist! We need more leadership and proactive approaches like this in BC. Municipalities, Coffee shops, Restaurants, and Events can easily adopt reusable items and save thousands of items not only from the landfill but from being created (using many resources) in the first place. “I think this initiative, in particular, is one of the better ways we’re tackling one of the top layers of the waste hierarchy where we actually look at stopping waste from happening in the first place rather than excepting the fact we produce it and manage it as best as we can,” - Carla Bitz, Environmental Coordinator, Town of Banff. The Town of Banff recently adopted a single-use bylaw aimed at reducing waste by 70% by 2028. Since its implementation in 2023, Banff has witnessed impressive compliance with the bylaw, demonstrating the community's commitment to sustainability! This comprehensive bylaw not only bans single-use plastic bags but also introduces fees for paper and reusable bags. Additionally, it requires all food service establishments to offer reusable options alongside disposable items. Banff's proactive approach, coupled with a strong focus on education, has received positive feedback from community members and set a commendable example for other municipalities. Happy Earth Month! 🌎 This April, join us at Shedd Aquarium in the fight against single-use plastics. As we embrace the Global theme “Planet vs. Plastics”, we’re pushing for pivotal changes right here in Illinois.  Last year, we celebrated the ban on polystyrene foam foodware in state facilities. Now, it’s time to extend this ban across all retail and dining establishments with HB 2376. Additionally, we’re stepping up our efforts with a new initiative, HB 4448/SB 2211, to ban plastic single-use bags in all Chicago stores and restaurants. It’s time for reusable bags to become the norm and align our city with the 11 other U.S. states that have successfully implemented similar bans.  Each year, 22 million pounds of plastic are dumped into the Great Lakes, threatening wildlife, contaminating water sources, and spoiling the natural beauty we all cherish.  Help us make a difference by signing a pre-written letter that I had the honor of crafting to Illinois legislators, urging them to support these critical bills to protect the planet.  https://lnkd.in/gwZXcktp   

This one is close to my heart - why is single use a thing. Do you know that most single use items are unrecyclable as they are covered in food contamination or made form unrecyclable material. The move to paper straws for example means straws are totally unrecyclable and often don't last to the end of the drink. If you too want to see the end of single use plastic, cardboard, paper, wood, bioplastics, veg ware etc then join the debate.

Although the #EU has taken steps to help make the #packaging industry more circular, it still needs to ensure the economy is adequately supported during the transition. Over the years, #brewers have invested heavily to reduce, reuse and recycle, cutting the environmental impact of #beer packaging throughout the lifecycle. As a testament to these efforts, more than half of all beer in the EU is sold in reusable packaging. The other half is in recyclable and recycled packaging. However, the transition to more circular packaging requires both investment and time. That is why we need a policy framework that is fair. California generates over 500,000 tons of plastic waste annually, primarily from plastic foodware. To combat this issue, Senator Catherine Blakespear has introduced SB 1167, legislation co-sponsored by leading environmental organizations. This bill mandates that chain restaurants provide reusable cups for dine-in customers, aiming to reduce single-use plastic cups. Reusable foodware for dine-in is what all states should be doing at minimum. We hope to see wide-scale adoption of this policy to help reduce reliance on single-use disposables. #reuse #reuselegislation #stopplasticpollution

Last month, I called on Culligan employees to join me in taking the Plastic Free July pledge to avoid single-use plastic products for the entire month. Avoiding all single-use plastic products is difficult. Nevertheless, the people of Culligan embraced the challenge. Throughout July, we shared smart ways to avoid items such as plastic grocery bags, single-use water bottles, food containers, plastic cutlery, extraneous packaging material and garbage bags. Paying attention to your plastic use is a real eye-opener. And many on our team went beyond just avoiding plastic to collecting and recycling it through volunteer clean-up events. Being united as a force for good defines our Culligan team.
