After a long journey, I am thrilled to announce that my first postdoc paper, and my first as first author, is finally published! This collaborative effort brought together two teams of Rosen Lab from Biophysics department at UT Southwestern and Sigman Lab from Department of Chemistry at University of Utah with unique expertise, and I’m deeply grateful to everyone involved—especially Hanna Clements and Matthew Sigman for their invaluable contributions. A special thanks to the reviewers as well, whose feedback both improved the work and, in true reviewer fashion, extended the timeline a bit. In this work, we investigated how biomolecular condensates regulate cellular functions by compartmentalizing molecules without a surrounding membrane. The functionality of these condensates is determined by the selective exclusion or enrichment of specific molecules, making it essential to understand their composition. While macromolecular composition is well-documented, we focused on the lesser-explored aspect of small-molecule composition. We quantified the partitioning of ~1,700 biologically relevant small molecules into various condensates, uncovering a million-fold variation in partitioning across compounds. Interestingly, this partitioning correlated across different condensates, suggesting that even seemingly distinct condensates share physical similarities. For one system, we observed that enriched compounds did not strongly bind to macromolecules outside of condensates, indicating that partitioning is driven by the hydrophobic environment emerging upon condensate formation. A machine learning model confirmed this, accurately predicting partitioning based on key physicochemical properties of the compounds, such as solubility and hydrophobicity. I am delighted to announce that the winner of the 2024 Senta Foulkes Research Prize has been awarded to Moshe Giladi. The Prize is awarded every three years to Fellows of the Israeli branch of the Foulkes Foundation, in recognition of excellence in their research and academic achievements since completing the term of their Fellowship grant. Moshe's research aims to elucidate the structure-function relations underlying the activity of enzymes with a specific interest in enzymes involved in human diseases. As a physician-researcher, he uses cutting-edge molecular methods from the fields of molecular biology, biochemistry and  biophysics to address basic mechanisms governing enzymatic activity in health and disease at the molecular level. Olivia Rissland, PhD, associate professor of biochemistry and molecular genetics, has been awarded a $1 million grant from the W.M. Keck Foundation to study cells that produce extremely large amounts of a single type of protein. "The basic idea is to study how some cells produce a lot of one thing,” says Rissland. “You can think of a cell as a manufacturing plant.
