Danish delegation at Climate Action Week has me reflecting on what happens to businesses and industries when Governments are missing in action for decades. NATIONAL: By 2030 Denmark aims to reduce emissions 70% on 1990 levels. In contrast Australia has a target of 43% on 2005 levels. BUILDINGS: A Danish group of 600 businesses (Reduction Roadmap) is gunning to deliver 5.8kg of GHGe/m2 in the built environment which is less than half the target required to deliver for the ambition in the Paris Agreement. ENERGY: In 2022, 67% of Denmark's delivered energy was generated by renewables (wind 47%, bioenergy and waste 11% and solar 6%). In Australia this figure was 32%. BIOGAS/BIOENERGY: Australia seems to have a big opportunity in agricultural residues to be gasified for use as TRUE natural gas utilized locally. AI FOR PERMITTING: Industry tells us that delayed approvals processes are the key barrier to standing up large scale renewable energy and storage. Denmark, that rates 1 (compared to Australia's 7) on the league table for digital government, is deploying AI to assist both submitting proponents and assessing teams to cut processing times. AI is guiding humans to provide more fit-for-purpose data at certain stages of the assessment process. It's always useful to dabble in other people's bubbles to see one's own with a fresh pair of eyes. #CAWSYD2024

#Environment | 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗖𝗢₂ 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀 | Empa researchers, led by Prof. Dr. Pietro Lura, have developed a method to significantly reduce atmospheric CO₂ by incorporating it into building materials, with predictions showing a potential for up to 400 billion tons of carbon capture by 2150. Their approach relies on futuristic calculations that assume an abundance of renewable energy after 2050, which would enable the efficient removal of CO₂ from the atmosphere. This method takes into account global material usage and unavoidable emissions, offering a possible route to large-scale carbon capture. Empa's breakthrough paves the way for the practical use of carbon-negative building materials, which could revolutionize the construction industry and greatly aid in combating climate change.
