♀️ 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐩𝐨𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐫 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 This great study published in The Lancet summarises the Global Burden of Diseases Study. While women live longer than men, they experience a higher burden of morbidity-driven conditions, such as back pain, anxiety, and depressive disorders. These discrepancies become even more pronounced as we age. Research and healthcare services should help to develop preventative measures and targeted interventions that would enable women to live not only longer but also healthier lives, thus reducing the current health gap. Health Inequities Affect Everyone and Solving Them Benefits Everyone In 2003, in “Unequal Treatment: Confronting Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health Care,” the Institute of Medicine examined the existence and drivers of health inequities in the U.S. More than 20 years later, the The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s new report, “Ending Unequal Treatment: Strategies to Achieve Equitable Health Care and Optimal Health for All,” finds little progress and concludes that improvement will require policy change and structural redesign. The report emphasizes that health inequities affect everyone and solving them benefits everyone. Earlier this year World Health Organization published the Operational framework for monitoring social determinants of health equity. 🤔Why is it important? 💡Social determinants of health – broadly defined as the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age, and people’s access to power, money and resources – have a powerful influence on health inequities. For example, all of these conditions can influence the vulnerability to NCDs and increase the exposure to NCD risk factors. AccendoWave - A Pain #Data Company While longer life expectancies for men and women have been a societal success story, this is not the full picture. Despite living longer than men, women spend 25% more of their lives in poor health. Health burdens have a heavy impact on women’s lives, with ripple effects for broader society. The report addresses the root causes of the women’s health gap (focused on science, data, care delivery and investment) and charts a number of ways forward to close this gap – from incentivizing new financing models to investing in women-centric research and implementing more inclusive health policies. Addressing the women’s health gap could potentially boost the global economy by at least $1 trillion annually by 2040. Investing in women's health – which is more than just sexual or reproductive health – is therefore not only a matter of health equity, but a chance to help women have expanded workforce participation. Most importantly, it would help them live healthier lives. Social Determinants of Health are the non-medical influences in life that effect health equity and contribute to health disparities. These are divided into 5 categories as defined by Healthy People 2030: •economic stability •education access & quality •health care access & quality •neighborhood & built environment •social & community context According to the CDC in 2024, these factors together have a greater impact on health outcomes then genetics or accessable health services. I'm on a mission 🚀 To diversify health research and the health space to reduce health inequalities and improve health outcomes 💪🏽 WHY? 🧐 Because ethnic minorities' lived experiences are not being captured in essential health research exacerbating health inequalities and negatively impacting health outcomes 📉 It means research outcomes are not always applicable to everyone with a particular health condition because there is a limited understanding around how ethnic minorities are affected by that health condition 😐 And it's time to change the narrative 📖 It will take a collective effort to drive this change and I believe that with time we will get there, it will make research more valuable, far reaching and life changing 💚 👁️ See the bigger picture 🌍 #healthinequality #diversity #populationhealth #healthoutcomes #biggerpicture #inequity #health #ethnicminorities
