⏳ Every four minutes, a young person in the UK becomes homeless. That’s over 370 young people every day - 136,000 young people every year. And it’s going to get worse.   As the colder months approach, LandAid is launching the Every Minute Matters campaign aiming to raise £1.36 million, helping thousands of young people facing homelessness. The equivalent of just £1,000 for every young person, these funds will support charities working with young people in crisis, as well as those desperately trying to access move-on and independent accommodation. We’ll also be helping young people find and keep work too.   This is part of our new strategy to #EndYouthHomelessness, but we can’t do it alone. Refuge hopping and sleeping under bridges: One in 10 teens polled faced homelessness last year. In short:One in 10 young people who responded to Mission Australia's 2023 Youth Survey faced homelessness in the past year. Rates of homelessness among teenagers have persisted since 2017, with the issue becoming more challenging due to the affordable housing crisis.  What's next? The charity is calling for at least 15,000 dedicated social housing youth tenancies, and a focus on prevention measures.  https://lnkd.in/gspskSR6

The work we do at VPS often means we are working in vacant and unoccupied spaces, and our operations teams often see first-hand the effects of rough sleepers at our sites, with persons that may be sheltering from the elements. We have been collaborating with Crisis – Our chosen charity partner to provide information and guidance to our teams. We believe our colleagues should feel empowered to help, aid and assist anyone struggling with homelessness. Once again, the number of children experiencing homelessness has risen. In Greater Manchester, that's 7,679 children living in uncertainty and disruption. At the same time, we've seen a rise in the number of households owed a relief duty by their local authority. In other words, a rise in the number of households who are currently homeless. Genuinely affordable housing, meaningful preventative work, and full wrap around support to people without a home or facing a night on the streets are some of the raft of measures needed to truly end homelessness, and truly eradicate the need for rough sleeping. Greater Manchester Mayor's Charity are proud to support so many dedicated organisations in the city-region working hard to bring about real change, but we depend on the generosity and support of the businesses and people of the region to do that. Humans have marked Winter solstice (the longest night of the year) for millenia, looking forward with hope to brighter days. For people doing it tough, a period of homelessness really can be "the longest night". On Winter solstice (20 June) Tessa van Duyn and I will spend a night out in the cold to raise funds for people who are homeless or at risk.
