When I first started working with Holly Hunt this year (I’ve known her for years but we hadn’t got to know each other properly until this year), I was really impressed by how her level of experience and knowledge could really help within the business we’re growing. When you niche in something like we do, you can never expect a flow of oven-ready people to join the team who have been valuing and selling HMOs how we do. That’s a bi-product of being a specialist business. But what we do need is people who can complement the team and give our clients a service that they feel has come from each person having a deep understanding of their craft, ideally within HMOs. Holly has been an Ops Manager within a thriving HMO managing agent for 8 years and has built the team, brand and client list of a very good agency in Kent. She knows way more than me on so many very specific and valuable aspects within the HMO life-cycle. Our investors love her as she talks from experience on what makes a quality HMO tick, what makes rooms fill, tenants happy and voids reduce. That’s invaluable. I love asking her for advice or using her as a sound board on the areas that she’s more experienced than me. You’ll get to know Holly a lot more this year as she’s going to be going to events, talks, meetings and properties. One of the best things about building a team is people flourish and hear them say “I’m loving this” or “I can feel I’m adding value and I didn’t expect that so soon”. Fair play Hols.

If we define success by winning major trophies, English managers may struggle to make a case for themselves. But what if we looked at this differently? What if, instead of focusing on the absence of success, we turned to what Brian Clough left behind—lessons that are still relevant today? Clough, who truly knew what success tasted like, undoubtedly imparted wisdom that could guide ambitious and hungry managers seeking to achieve at the highest level. Having studied Clough almost obsessively, I believe his advice from half a century ago remains as pertinent now as it was during his back-to-back European Cup victories with Forest. Dale: "I always have a genuine interest in the client and their business. Generally, all initial meetings start with, 'Tell me about yourself and your business.' Dale: "Seeing the continual growth and record numbers of new clients becoming part of the Acis family. For a business that has been going for over 35 years and continuing to break records and increase market share, it is a testament to all our team, but importantly, the amount of referrals we receive from existing clients and various small business Facebook groups is very pleasing and humbling." 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭'𝐬 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞? Dale: "Having spent nearly 40 years in financial services in various national management roles, I’m always keen to share my experiences and thoughts on helping practices—not just with a documentation solution, but also by exploring how they can be more profitable, manage risk (a key cornerstone of the Acis offering), and gain insights into best practices, from large multi-state businesses to sole director-run enterprises." That same passion extends to his love for the Richmond Football Club, which has earned him some playful ribbing from his Brisbane colleagues after the Lions’ premiership win. Everything you ever wanted to know about boards but didn't know who to ask. What a great topic for an over lunch speech with the remarkably impressive ladies from the Swiss Australian Chamber of Industry and Commerce. Thanks a million to Martin G. Scarpino GAICD for organising the event. I really want to mention how great the food and service were. Bei Bar and Bistro in Darlinghurst put on an amazing lunch with Swiss Italian inspired food and the tastiest bread with garlic and honey butter that I have ever had. If you go there (and you should) don't skip the bread! Service was friendly and knowledgeable and we were all able to give our full attention to the topic. If you would like to organise a similar event for your group, please let me know. We talked about director duties and liabilities, shareholder v. stakeholder primacy, how to start a board career, the many options for director education and devlopment, what you need to know before you start and what you can learn as you progress, and a few stories about boards that suffered the consequences after doing the wrong thing!
