At KSQM, our PhD students are deeply engaged in innovative research.Among them is Konrad Scharff, currently pursuing his PhD studies , provides insights into his area of expertise. "I work with excitation states in solids, to be more precise magnetic and elastic ones. What these two terms refer to are periodic rearrangements of the atoms’ magnetic moments and positions in the crystal respectively, deviating from their energetic equilibrium. I'm looking at a system called 'easy-plane ferromagnet,' a system in which magnetic moments are energetically confined to a two-dimensional plane and strive for a parallel alignment. I'm looking at how those two kinds of excitations can merge ('hybridize') to create new kinds of exotic behavior. We investigate said phenomenon from the theory side to match and explain equally exciting and puzzling data that has been recorded and studied by our experimental collaborators."

#PKU alumna Wang Xiao has received the 2024 Sloan Research Fellowships. Wang is a core institute member of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard and an assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry at MIT. Wang received her B.S. in Chemistry and Molecular Engineering from PKU and her Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Chicago, and conducted postdoctoral research at Stanford University Bioengineering. The Wang Group develops and applies new chemical and biophysical tools to better understand the molecular events in the brain. #PKUAlumni #SloanFellow

Successfully defended my PhD titled “characterization and Source Apportionment of Urban air pollutants” on 11th March 2024. Here I characterised volatile organic compounds in urban areas with a focus on emerging contaminants using binPMF and studied interactions between biogenic and anthropogenic VOCs. During my research I used several high resolution mass spectrometers such as Vocus PTR-Tof, Fast Polarity Switching Tof (Vocus-B) and CI-Orbitrap.

On thursday I successfully passed my viva and have officially finished my PhD with the University of Southampton joint with Diamond light source and ISIS neutron and Muon source! My research was based on using electrodeposition through liquid crystal templates to create novel nanostructured material
