Last week’s solar storm led to some incredible views of the northern lights, along with making amateur radio operators dreams come true with incredible conditions for long-distance contact. Ham radio is a hobby and service that allocates portions of the radio spectrum for amateur operators, known as "hams," to use radios for communication. After a storm, solar storms can create a temporary ionized layer of “crust” around the Earth. Long distance radio requires very long wavelengths. Long wavelengths require long antennas. With the “crust” charged, however, shorter wavelengths that would typically go out in space start to bounce, so a shorter antenna and less power work extremely well. A 100W radio may be able to make intercontinental transmissions (normally 1,000W+ needed!). Check out this week’s newsletter to learn more: https://lnkd.in/gU9r3fGc

📡 Learn about antenna with me Day 3 - The Half-Wave Dipole Hello antenna explorers! Today we're looking at a common antenna type: the half-wave dipole. 🤔 What is it? A half-wave dipole is like a straight wire cut in half, with each half about a quarter of a wavelength long. 📏 Size matters: • It's called "half-wave" because its total length is half the wavelength it's designed for • Example: For a 100 MHz FM radio signal (3-meter wavelength), the antenna would be about 1.5 meters long 🌟 Why is it special? 1. It's simple but effective 2. Often used as a reference to compare other antennas 3. You can make one at home for fun! 📺 Real-life examples: • Traditional TV antennas ("rabbit ears") • Some FM radio antennas • Ham radio operators often use these 💡 Fun fact: The half-wave dipole naturally matches well with common radio equipment, making it easy to use. 🤔 Think about this: Next time you see a straight antenna on a device, could it be a half-wave dipole? Questions? Ideas? Share in the comments! #AntennaBasics #RadioTech #EverydayScience
