In case you were not aware, May is mental health awareness month. If you are on social media, you will likely see it every day for a while. I am excited to see all the attention but I continue to ask, what are the discussions leading to? What is the action we should be taking in our business and our lives? Billions are being funneled into mental health but ask yourself if you see any of it working. Most statistics are on a dramatic rise. I was excited to be a part of the discussion with Rahul N. Mehra, M.D. last week when he declared April 25th Action over Awareness day. I love that he is calling on community leaders, business owners, teachers, coaches, mentors and parents to challenge the discussion and drive for more action and much more prevention. He has solutions but he is also asking for what else might be working. Sharing good ideas can help us establish a public health policy around mental health. We teach our kids to wear helmets and yet what should we be sharing about suicide? When is the appropriate time to discuss it? I promise they are hearing about it and some are discussing it as early as eight years old with each other. If your child is getting facts from social media and not trusted leaders, problems will arise. If you are a parent and you are looking for answers, check our Emotional Vaccines. The problem is bigger than any one person, organization or program can fix. The best solutions tend to be simple and I think are best led by great parents. As a parent, I want good information to share so I really appreciate Rahul Mehra MD's work.
