What an incredible turnout at Michigan Technological University's Michigan Day Career Fest! Hundreds of students had the chance to explore career opportunities with top companies from across the state, including 13 U.P. employers.  As a region, the U.P is blessed with nearly 20,000 higher-ed students. According to Amy Berglund of InvestUP, for a rural region, this is “significant” and reflects why this is “a great opportunity to introduce students to the U.P. employers, and also the U.P. employers to the students.” With MTU enrollment surging to 7,430 and earning accolades for early career salaries, the Michigan Day Career Fest couldn’t come at a better time! This paired momentum is creating exciting opportunities for both students and U.P. employers. “I wanted to be somewhere that connected me with nature and allowed me to pursue my environmental interests through practical, hands-on experiences. I chose Michigan Tech because of its focus on sustainability and collaboration.” On the road to commencement, Michigan Tech’s 2024 Midyear Commencement undergraduate student speaker Aliyah Maxwell-Abrams left their mark on the Tech community, just as the Tech community left a lasting impression on them. This week, they will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and a minor in mathematics. “Michigan Tech offers countless opportunities to grow—from leadership programs to the Career Fair, which opened doors to different career prospects. For our next #DYWDecade post, we are looking back at Stromness Academy’s Careers Week. A part of the school calendar since 2019, Careers Week is targeted at pupils in S3 to support them as they make their subject choices for S4, a process which will start them on their journey to their preferred post-school destination. In partnership with the school, we deliver a week of employer engagement activity to inspire and inform pupils of the variety of careers available in Orkney and further afield, encouraging them to explore the range of pathways into those careers. This can include, apprenticeships, further or higher education or moving straight into employment. The week begins with a whole year assembly where a local businessperson will speak to pupils about their own career journey and give them some advice for their future. Previous speakers have included Cameron Stout, Raymond Besant, Corinne Sinclair, Glen McLellan and Callum MacInnes. Throughout the week, pupils will get careers inputs in their subject classes, take part in a workplace visit and have the opportunity to speak to employers during daily ‘Lunch with an Employer’ sessions. We have also held entrepreneurships inputs to encourage them to explore setting up their own business, and STEM activities to help them develop their transferrable skills, such as problem solving, team working and communication. They will also hear inputs from Skills Development Scotland Careers Advisers so they know the people who are in the school to support them with their decision making. Careers Week concludes with a careers fair in the school which is open to all pupils. This event is a great chance for local employers to engage with pupils, promoting their business and the opportunities that exist within it. We are really grateful to everyone who has supported Careers Week since 2019 and we hope to continue this week of activity for the next decade!

📢 Connecting with Tomorrow's Innovators: Our University Fair 🧑🎓 Strategy for 2025 The first month of the new year is almost behind us, and for me, it’s been all about planning ✍ for various focus topics in the months ahead. While this might sound a bit boring at first glance, the reality is far more dynamic, as each focus topic is backed by a dedicated Purpose Team. It’s only through teamwork that we can define OKRs, goals, and actions that will drive us forward. One of the highlights this year has been our approach to personnel marketing planning at Bosch eBike Systems. For the first time, we’ve developed our university marketing plan in collaboration with the eBike University Network. The goal of the network is to connect university activities across eBike, ensuring better coordination for things like cooperation models and university fair participation, with the ultimate aim of attracting key knowledge holders. After several exchange rounds, we’ve narrowed down the key universities and have committed to attending 13 university career fairs this year 🦾! So it´s not HR telling the functional areas where to participate, it´s about defining the future needs together and then setting up the university marketing strategy. A big thank you to Julia Büker from the central HR marketing team at Bosch! With the centralized university fair plan and defining Bosch focus universities, we were able to identify the strategically most important universities and fairs for eBike Systems. Among the events we’re attending this year are the KIT Career Fair, Formula Students at Hockenheimring, Career Afterwork at Pforzheim University, and the Computer Science Forum at the University of Stuttgart. The CNet Training Team is excited to help put University Technical Colleges (UTCs) on the education map by celebrating #thinkUTC week. UTC Heathrow was where the Digital Futures Programme started, uniting leading organisations across the data centre and network infrastructure sectors to help design and deliver a curriculum for 14-18 year olds, focused on the digital infrastructure industry. The aim; to introduce our amazing industry and the career opportunities within it to the younger generation, whilst also helping to tackle the talent shortage we have experienced for so long. And... it is working, with three more ALET UTCs now delivering the Digital Futures Programme it is making a difference. The employer engagement as part of the Digital Futures Programme is fantastic, designing and delivering workshops and challenges, as well as teaching core skills, attending open evenings and career fairs, we celebrate this important industry collaboration and all the industry partners that are commited to making it a continued success. Employability is at the top of the agenda of higher education institutions, as the major barrier graduates face securing employment is the lack of work experience. Career teams at HE institutions do their share to support students with training, workshops, career fairs, and internships. However, integrating industry practice into the curriculum enables students to gain experience while in the classroom, and working on their activities, course projects, and assignments. To be the first career center of its kind that is fully student-run and to create legacy events that will continue to serve UH STEM students for the foreseeable future coupled with joining the ranks of hosting one of UH's largest career fairs in one year of operation feels like the right thing to do.
