The goal was to never "sell" products to people, the goal was to never push product. The goal is to be consultative expert whose mission is to provide solutions, and hopefully have fun while doing it! As I am transitioning my career into med device, I am learning that this same mindset is beneficial to have. I believe this mindset would resonate no matter the industry or application. Focus on helping people, providing positive outcomes, becoming an expert in your field, and being a consultative resource for those around you. The results will follow. Will I ever use one of these tools on a patient? Will I work in the orthopaedic space? The point is, no matter the application, it is important to learn how to learn, expand your knowledge set, learn how to be a product knowledge expert and a resource. I can’t count how many times I get asked by clinicians about what it is like working in med device and in sales. Never in a million years would I have thought I would be consulting with physicians and surgeons. That’s a story for another time…, but if you’re considering med device, here is a nugget of one characteristic you will need; Resilience. Facing constant rejection is just part of the journey. In life, we experience unreturned calls, ignored emails, outright refusals, lies, mouse holes, and “no’s”. This field just gets a much bigger share. You learn that each rejection is an opportunity to refine. Persistence, adaptation, and continued learning are the building blocks of being resilient. I’ve learned to use those blocks in my personal life as well. This road is tough, but the rewards of improving patient outcomes and advancing medical care make it all worth it and it’s the biggest reward. That one essential trait that separates success from failure in this field is resilience 💪. It builds like a muscle over time. I’ve been building this muscle over the last few years and I surprise myself at how rejection (in life) just rolls off my back. We all have this same story. No matter how wonderful you are, if you're in the wrong business environment, you will be invisible. I'll apply this to our discovery of how we receive a 75% engagement rate, 3x increase consultations, and built trust w/busy surgeons using personalized videos (1/2 minutes). 4 years of data proof of concept. We assumed med tech sales reps would want to learn our approach because traditional sales prospecting is historically difficult and low engagement rate. Yet, 90% of med tech sales reps are indifferent to our approach. This year, we pivoted. If 90% of med tech sales reps are indifferent to learn what we teach, why don't we teach physicians how to use personalized videos to prescribe trust with their patients, earn media attention, and increase patient referrals? We never considered coaching physicians to do what we thought med tech sales reps would do - stand out/build trust/drive revenue using personalized videos. To our excitement, physicians are motivated to learn our personalized video approach. Lesson Learned: We were in the wrong environment & nearly invisible. How might this apply to your situation?
