This new research shows that despite the well-known health burden from obesity, government funding for preventive research & programs is relatively low. ⬇️ We need strategic & ongoing funding allocation to support obesity prevention research, implementation and sustainment of evidence-based obesity prevention initiatives in Aus! https://loom.ly/2aEywTs @phrpjournal

Screening and early diagnosis are critical tools in addressing rising #obesity rates. Early diagnosis of obesity can lead to better control of disease and to improved patient-centred health outcomes. Obesity screening can lead to identification of factors that may change the likelihood of developing obesity. Learn more about these terms here👇 https://lnkd.in/e3a84kmU

Today is National Obesity Day… We’ve made a lot of progress by educating people about the truth of obesity as a disease and bringing the conversation to the forefront of healthcare… but we still have a lot more work to do! Sadly, anti-obesity medications are still not part of standard coverage, limiting access for those who really need them. And there are still millions of people who believe obesity is a simple condition of calories in and calories out. As we recognize National Obesity Day, let’s commit to deepening our understanding of obesity, advocating for access to quality care, and working to help patients fight this disease.

The recognition of #obesity as a complex chronic non-communicable disease #NCD should inform the development of evidence-based guidelines for the diagnosis and management of obesity. Diagnosis of obesity should not be based solely on presence of abnormal/excessive fat accumulation (anthropometric component), but instead include analysis of present and potential effects that dysfunctional/excessive fat accumulation may have on #health (clinical component). https://lnkd.in/eb4XJ8uh

Thanks for highlighting this Alexey Kulikov ! It's so crucial to have policymakers at all levels realise that all countries who have signed up to ICD 6 and onwards (1948) already embedded the "recognition of Obesity as a disease in its own right". But having a legal basis is only a beginning. This great piece of work by European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO) comes at a time where we need to start #Implementation and understanding the "how" and "what to be taken into account" for clinical diagnosis is key. At the Foundation for the Rights of Citizens with Obesity, we are building a picture of the ramifications of this long-awaited paradigm shift. And also using the vocabulary framework also recently published in the International Journal of Obesity "Providing a common language for obesity: the European Association for the Study of Obesity obesity taxonomy" The two pieces of work are part of the same puzzle to build a policy to practice framework for #ObesityNCD Bowman-Busato, J., Schreurs, L., Halford, J.C.G. et al.
