Can we add electric water heaters, heat pumps, EV chargers, and all-electric appliances, to homes without upgrading the breaker panel (or "box" as some say)? Can we use smart controls to save older homes $2,000 - 10,000 in upfront electrician work? Yes, we can! In this preprint: https://lnkd.in/ekVaWJxE, we ran an electric home in a cold climate that is currently rated at 200 A, at 100 A. The house was rated at 100 A, prior to its electrification. Testing was performed for over 30 days, with temperatures as low as -20 C. Through the predictive operation of the two main load centers, a heat pump with backup heating (up to 19.2 kW!) and an electric water heater (4.5 kW), we were able to eliminate all instances of load synchronization without sacrifice of comfort. Simulations showed we can also support an additional Level II EV charger at (11.5 kW). These results are very promising for dealing with one of the major bottlenecks to electrification the residential sector is facing, that is the rating of the breakers and wires connecting homes to the utility service. In Alberta in your hazard assessments Minister of Affordability and Utilities Nathan Neudorf issued the following statement in response to an electrical grid alert from the Alberta Electrical Systems Operator: 🚨We are calling on all Albertans to reduce their electric demand immediately to essentials only. Extreme cold resulting in high power demand has put the province’s electricity grid at high risk of rotating outages tonight. 🚨On top of high demand of our own energy generation, Alberta's grid receives electricity from neighbouring provinces. Extreme weather in Saskatchewan and British Columbia is impacting electricity sharing, which is also a contributing factor to tonight's grid alert. The Alberta Electric System Operator has activated its emergency grid management plan to work with local distribution utilities to avoid potential rolling brownouts. 🥶🗣Here are some easy ways to conserve electricity this evening and into the night: Turn off unnecessary lights and electrical appliances; Minimize the use of space heaters; Delay the use of major power-consuming appliances such as washers, dryers and dishwashers; Delay charging electric vehicles and/or plugging in block heaters; Cook with your microwave, crockpot or toaster oven instead of an electric stove or oven; Limit the use of kitchen or bathroom ventilation fans; Work on a laptop instead of a desktop computer (laptops are more energy-efficient than desktop units); Unplug electric appliances when not in use, as they continue to drain energy even if they’re off (or use a power bar to cut power to multiple appliances with a single button); Close your curtains/shades/blinds to cover drafty windows.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴: -Types of Wire: Common types include Romex (non-metallic sheathed cable) and BX (armored cable), each designed for different purposes and locations. -Circuit Paths: Electricity travels through wires in specific circuits, each with a designated amount of power. -Grounding: This is a safety feature that allows excess electricity to flow safely to the ground, preventing shocks. 𝟯. 𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗶𝘁 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀: -Overload Protection: Circuit breakers act like safety valves, tripping to prevent damage if too much electricity flows through a circuit. -Short Circuits: These occur when electricity takes an unexpected path, potentially causing a fire. Breakers prevent this by interrupting the flow. 𝟰. 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: -Outlets: Provide power to appliances and devices. -Switches: Control the flow of electricity to lights and other devices. -Light Fixtures: House light bulbs and provide illumination. 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗧𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂! Never touch exposed wires. Use caution around water and electricity. Don't overload circuits. Never tamper with electrical wiring. What is the reason transformers have a higher voltage rating than the source? Transformers are designed with a higher voltage rating on the secondary side (output) than the primary side (input) for several reasons: Voltage Transformation: The primary purpose of a transformer is to change the voltage level of an electrical circuit. By having a higher voltage on the secondary side, transformers can step up or step down the voltage as needed to suit various applications. Power Conservation: Transformers are built to conserve power. When voltage is stepped up, current is stepped down proportionally, and vice versa. This allows for the same amount of power to be transferred from the primary to the secondary side, assuming ideal conditions (neglecting losses). Efficiency: Transformers operate more efficiently when the turns ratio (ratio of primary turns to secondary turns) results in a moderate voltage change. High-voltage transmission lines use step-up transformers to minimize losses during long-distance power transmission. Safety: Having a higher voltage on the secondary side can enhance safety. For example, it reduces the risk of electric shock in household electrical systems because higher voltage transmission lines are typically located far from residential areas. Electrical Compatibility: Transformers enable different electrical devices and systems to work together. For example, household appliances typically require lower voltages than what is supplied by the power grid, so step-down transformers are used to provide the appropriate voltage. In summary, transformers have a higher voltage rating on the secondary side to facilitate voltage transformation, conserve power, enhance efficiency, ensure safety, and enable electrical compatibility in various applications.
