Upstream businesses consist of companies involved in the exploration and production of oil and gas. These are the firms that search the world for reservoirs of the raw materials and then drill to extract that material. These companies are often known as "E&P" for "exploration and production." The upstream segment is characterized by high risks, high investment capital, extended duration as it takes time to locate and drill, as well as being technologically intensive. Virtually all cash flow and income statement line items of E&P companies are directly related to oil and gas production. E&P companies do not usually own their own drilling equipment or employ a drilling rig staff. Instead, they hire contract drilling companies to drill wells for them and the contract drilling companies generally charge for their services based on the amount of time they work for an E&P company. Drillers do not generate revenue that is tied directly to oil and gas production, as is the case for E&P companies. Once a well is drilled, various activities are involved in generating and maintaining its production over time. These activities are called well servicing and can include logging, cementing, casing, perforating, fracturing, and maintenance. Oil drilling and oil servicing thus represent two different business activities within the oil and gas industry.

Access Middle East Mud pumps are a critical component in drilling operations, particularly in the oil and gas industry. They are used to circulate drilling fluid, commonly known as "mud," into and out of the wellbore during drilling. Mud plays a vital role in maintaining well stability, cooling the drill bit, and removing cuttings from the well.

Credit to Gary Mcwilliams August 15, 2024 New drilling technology to put billions of barrels of oil in reach, analysts say https://lnkd.in/gSjCc98M An oil production breakthrough that producers say can safely tap ultra-high pressure fields could put up to 5 billion barrels of previously inaccessible crude into production, analysts said. Chevron on Monday disclosed it had pumped first oil from a field at 20,000 pounds per square inch pressures, a third greater than any prior well. Its $5.7 billion Anchor project employs specially designed equipment from NOV (NOV.N), opens new tab, Dril-Quip (DRQ.N), opens new tab and drillships from Transocean (RIGN.S) The new gear promises Chevron's Anchor and similar projects by Beacon Offshore Energy and BP will deliver a combined 300,000 barrels of new oil, and put 2 billion barrels of previously unavailable U.S. oil within producers' reach, she said. "These ultra-high pressure fields are going to be a big driver for production growth in the Gulf of Mexico," Usoro added. The Gulf of Mexico has produced below the record 2019 level of 2 million barrels per day, and the additional oil could help return the region to its peak output. BP has its own high-pressure technology it hopes can tap 10 billion barrels of known oil. Its first 20k project, Kaskida, was discovered in 2006 and put aside because of a lack of high-pressure technology. Similar high-pressure, high-temperature oil fields that would benefit from the 20k technology are found off the coasts of Brazil, Angola and Nigeria, said Aditya Ravi, a Rystad Energy analyst. The Gulf of Mexico will be the proving ground for the new gear. Brazil has major offshore developments that "are prime candidates for future 20k technology application due to their complex high pressure, high temperature environments," he said. Including non-U.S. fields, more than 5 billion barrels of known oil and gas of known resources globally could benefit from the technology, Ravi said. Those volumes equate to about 50 days of current global production. Picture Credit to https://lnkd.in/gFdja2qf

What is the Christmas Tree🌲 in oil and gas exploration? The Christmas Tree is an assembly of valves connected to the wellhead (on top) used to regulate the flow of fluids during production. The blowout preventor is used during drilling (I think it is placed on top of the wellhead also) to prevent reservoir fluids from gushing out to the surface (Secondary well control), thereby preventing what is known as a gusher or a blowout. Meaning you may not blow up 🔥. Whereas, the Christmas tree is used to direct the flow of the fluids at the wellhead to the production sites at higher pressures than it got there with "I suspect"...

PDC Drill Bits In Oil & Gas | #drilling_manual PDC drill bits are a critical component in oil and gas drilling operations. These bits are designed to withstand the extreme pressure and high temperatures encountered during drilling, and they are manufactured with advanced materials and cutting-edge technologies. PDC drill bits offer many advantages over traditional drill bits, including longer lifespan, increased drilling speed, and improved efficiency. With the growing demand for oil and gas around the world, the use of PDC drill bits has become increasingly important for the industry. In the oil and gas industry, the use of PDC drill bits has revolutionized the drilling process. These bits are highly durable and can withstand harsh drilling conditions, making them ideal for use in deep-water drilling projects, shale formations, and other challenging environments. PDC drill bits are also more cost-effective than traditional drill bits, as they require less maintenance and can be used for longer periods of time. As the demand for oil and gas continues to grow, the use of PDC drill bits will only become more widespread. #deepwaterdrilling #shaleformations #maintenance #longevity #PDCdrillbits #oilandgas #drilling #cuttingedge #drillingspeed Read Full Article: https://lnkd.in/dqJRSfuY Download Free Books: https://lnkd.in/dgnyhW2Q Watch Learning Videos: https://bit.ly/3pKS5dd

WOW - Short Read Full of Important Data on Efficiency and Cost Trends Important observation for drillers - "Wood Mackenzie estimates a 5% improvement in drilling efficiency equates to about 28 fewer rigs needed in the market". Like the bit industry of yore, we now have performance oriented drilling contractors generating differentiation for themselves that reduces total number of units. This is already impacting the number of wells per rig as well as feet drilled per day per rig delivering superior results across N America land. #spe #iadc #energy #oilandgas #drilling #automation

Note # 11 Upstream- The Upstream companies are in the business of finding and extracting the oil and gas. They are also known as Exploration and Production companies. These companies will use various methods to find out if a certain area has oil and then prepare the area for drilling and then extract the oil and gas. Phases in the upstream industry Licensing 🗒️The parties need to first get a license for drilling. The companies need to get permission from the owners of the land or the government to start drilling. Exploration 🔍 After obtaining the license, the JVA companies need to start going through a process to find out if there is actually oil and gas in this area. They do gravity survey, seismic surveys and use other means to determine if there is a good chance of finding the black gold here. Development 🏗️ The process of development involves building facilities to produce oil and gas effectively. E.g. this might be construction of roads, setting up of equipment that is needed to extract the oil and gas etc. Production 🏭 This involves the actual extraction, processing and exporting of the oil and gas. A hole is dig to start extracting oil and gas. Once we extract the oil and gas, we need to process it and then transport it to the refinery. Abandonment ⛔ Once the oil and gas extraction is done, the hole must be plugged, and everything should be brought back to how it was before the process started. This is called abandonment.

Well Sidetracking - Schlumberger Drilling a sidetrack is a common technique used in the oil and gas industry to increase production from a well. This involves drilling a new borehole from the existing wellbore to access new zones or bypass damaged sections. Sidetracking can also be used to re-enter a well and drill a new section in a different direction. This technique is often employed when the original wellbore becomes damaged or is no longer producing as desired. By drilling a sidetrack, operators can access new reservoirs and increase overall production from the well.

Underbalanced drilling (UBD) is a drilling technique used in the oil and gas industry that involves drilling a well with less pressure in the wellbore than the formation pressure. This technique is used to reduce the damage to the reservoir, increase the rate of penetration, and reduce the risk of formation damage. UBD is a complex process that requires careful planning and execution to ensure maximum efficiency and safety. The technique is particularly useful in unconventional reservoirs such as shale, where traditional drilling methods may not be effective. One of the main benefits of UBD is that it reduces the amount of drilling fluid used during the drilling process. This is because, with less pressure in the wellbore, the formation fluids are allowed to flow into the wellbore, reducing the need for drilling fluid to be pumped in. This, in turn, reduces waste and environmental impact.…
